Struts

Front Strut Replacement by Jim King

Replacing the MK2 front struts requires an intermediate skill level.

If you have never done this before, coil springs contain alot of force.  Serious personal or property damage can result if they let loose.

Struts and spring replacements are located here Suspension Upgrades

 It takes about 4-6 hours.

You will need the following:   metric hand tools   torque wrench   BIG BOY pipe wrench   small hack saw, Dremel like cutting wheel or very strong metal cutting snips   jack stands   a milk crate or similar to the hold brake caliper

Here is an exploded view of the front struts

If you have the TSRM, it describes the complete procedure.

NOTE:There is one task that will save you alot of time and prevent bleeding the brakes.

Where the brake line is mounted on the strut tube, remove the slide in clips. Pull the brake line back and carefully cut a slot toward the brake line. It will then look like a "U". This will allow you to twist it away slightly to pull the brake line out.

Strut Removal

Remove the brack caliper and rest it on the milk crate (or similar support object). Do not stretch the brake line, as you may damage it.

Remove the 3 nuts from the strut tower.

Remove the two bolts from the steering knuckle to strut housing.

The strut sits on two collars, which extend up about .2 inches.  Pry between the steering arm and lower control arm to unseat the strut tube

The strut assembly can now be removed. Give a squirt of PB Blaster on the threads of the shock lock nut. They can be stubborn.
