84-85 Fuel Pump Replacement by Jim King

Just a normal day driving along in your 84/85 MK2. Then suddenly it is bucking like a wild bronco.

Almost feels as if you are running out of gas, but the gas tank is not empty.

Could be the fuel pump. It seems they start to fail when the car is well into the 100K mileage range.

Diagnostics:

Here is where you test the fuel pump.  Commonly, when they start to fail, the fuel pump starts to sound like a washing machine.  You might need to remove the gas cap to listen to the fuel pump.

Replacement:

Here's an exploded view of the gas tank

Items to order

  • Fuel Pump (check with Toyota - several numbers available)
  • Fuel Filter that goes on the fuel pump (different for different years)
  • Fuel Filter clip (a 54 cent piece - recommended).  (23229-16010)
  • Rubber Filler Gasket (77169-14010)
  • Set of seven new screws (these tend to get very rusty)
  • Regular fuel filter (might as well since the fuel pressure is now released) (23300-49065)

Extra items you may need:

  • Fuel strap holding pins and clips.  These can get quite rusty.

Preparation:
First you must lube the bolts well in advance of this project. I can't recommend this enough.

Places you need to lube:

  • Two bolts that hold the gas tank strap (near the diff)
  • The fuel line nut that connects to the filler.  (You must lube this one alot)

Removal:
Drain the gas tank.  Either by siphon or by the tank drain plug. Open the fuel door and remove the three screws. There is a metal O-Ring that holds the rubber gasket.  Remove it. Remove the rubber gasket

Disconnect the battery.

Put the car on jacks (or ramps)

Remove the plastic stone protector on the front of the tank.
Using a jack, place it under the gas tank.  Remove the two rubber fuel line hoses (only one end needs to be disconnected)

Remove the two nuts on the front of the strap

Remove the clips holding the rear strap pins

Remove the pins

Slowly lower the tank a few inches.
