Big Brakes by Jim King |
|
|
| By today's standards, the
stock MK2 brake system is not sufficient to stop a 3000 lb car.
One of the main culprits to the brake system is the rotors are just
too thin. They easily heat up and induce fade. Many
cars today run the same diameter rotor, but are usually much thicker.
Install a 7MGTE as I have, and clearly the stock
braking power is the wrong mix. |
| With the help of
Dean at www.hotrodheaven.com,
Wilwood and Coleman Racing, I designed a Big Brake Kit for the MK2.
The design was for 12.19" x 1.25" rotors and Wilwood Dynalite
4 piston calipers. It required 16" wheels. |

The
adapter kit cost $300US in the Summer of 2002. It consisted
of a T6061-T6 Aluminum rotor adapter, steel caliper adapter bracket
and all mounting bolts. All parts were CNC machined and
then anodized or plated.

This left it to the buyer to purchase the calipers,
rotors, pads and brake lines. Typical end cost for everything
(kit and remaining parts) was in the range of $650-700US
A total of 19 kits were ordered. Here is the finished
install:

| Those
are stainless 3AN brake lines from Porterfield Brakes. It
required a female 10mmx1.0 to 3AN male fitting, two 3AN brake lines,
a 3AN union and a 3AN to 1/8 pipe 45 degree fitting. |
