when you go to your local autoparts store, while you have them look up alternators, ask them to look up a rebuild kit, (I havent seen an upgrade yet) I work for a large automotive chain here in california and it comes up in out parts counter computers usually scrolled under the alternator listings, (we usually have to order them tho,) the only ones we keep in stock are older gm and older ford startor and alternator rebuild kits.

A new brush holder assy. that includes new brushes is probably still available from Toyota, as is a new voltage regualtor, but don't be surprised if the price of a new regulator is about the same as a reman'd alt. from Toyota.

I've never been able to get the pulley off an alt without the SST which I don't have. Don't mean to hijack the thread, but along the same lines of diy.... any other way?

Not sure, myself. Maybe a strap wrench on the pulley and an impact wrench on the nut would work?

we have an electric impact wrench at autozone we use to change pulleys... works like a charm... you just have to put your foot on the pulley to keep it from spinning

:imwithst: except when i worked at autozone i used one of my dads old leather welding gloves and just held the pulley with my hand. the impact will take it off pretty easy.

i can get a set of brushes and both bearings for a couple bux... .but i was thinking diodes as well..... i thought there might be a kit somewhere.

also on a side note.... what increases the the amperage in the mkiii 7mge alternators?.... it has the same housing.... is it just tighter wound stators and an added diode set?

I've never had the 5M and 7M alternators side by side myself, but the difference probably lies in either the stator and/or the armature windings.

well since i work at autozone i had the privlage of putting them side by side.... same housings... just the back connections were turned clock wise slightly..... and i think the pully was different... but that can be swapped.

Hmmm. Just bought a new IR 650 pounder will have to try. One I had before was only like 350lbs and wouldn't budget.

the pulleys arent interchangeable. the shaft diameter is diff.

i wonder if there is another pulley i can get ahold of that will fit it..... that way i don't have to change the diameter of the current one.

i'll have to check out the pulleys when i go into work tomorrow.

I just completed my 5M/7M swap last weekend. Based on the experience I had the pulleys will swap out but the alternator bracket will need a little machining and I had to find a belt that was a little longer. My 7M unit came from a turbo car.

I just completed my MK3 alternator install today on the '84. Strange though that I did NOT need to grind any part of the bracket that the alternator bolts to! I had the MK2 alternator pulley bored out to fit on the MK3 alternator too. I ended up using a 5-rib 38.75" belt, but you really want one no longer than 38.5" long. The alternator is at the very end of the adjustment bracket, but still tight enough not to allow the belt to squeal. I also positioned the belt on the very inside of the alternator pulley, but on the center of both the crank pulley and water pump pulley. Seems to be a bit more square this way... http://www.azsupras.com/suprattop/mk3alternator.jpg
