Alright, first off, I'm new to the forum. Second, I did a search, pulled up nothing on the topic I'm really looking for.
Now there is an 82 or 83 celica-supra for sale for $300 (from somebody I know) I have only met him after his car has been off the road. It has been left outside for the last 1.5 years and he said (to his knowledge) that the only thing wrong is the head (cracked from overheating, coolant pouring out everywhere). The motor is a 2.8 5m, would anybody have any guess at what the price would be to buy a new head?
Also what would be the best ways to prep the car after having it sit for this long of a time period. I know it would be best to drain all fluids and replace them, along with o2 sensor, air/oil filters, plugs/wires/dist. cap. Is there anything else I should be aware of to change/check?
I know it's kind of out in the field, but with these cars, are they easy to dis-assemble? (dash, interior, front/rear ends?) I really want to make this into a beautiful car I can call my own and be proud of (My family and relatives have all owned Toyota's, they grew on me.), and can I really get into it and make sure there is no rust on it and remove rust that is there?
If I decide to take on this car, I'll make a page on cardomain, so everybody can see my progress.
Thanks for any and all help.

well a new head is around 599 from autozone. but why do you need a new head? is it warped? you might be able to salvage it by taking it to a machine shop and get the to do a valve job an plane it and check for cracks and so forth.
for a car that is sitting i would check tires, grease all ball joints and cv joints, check bearings, rotors and brakes, brake line check... maybe flush, check your power steering and maybe flush that, check tranny and motor mounts, check the undercarraige for rust and get that fixed immediately, check the hatch for rust .... thats a common place for our cars to decay, then of course hoses fluids and vaccum lines, and then cracked electrical component connections.
alot of stuff in our cars is easy to disassemble.... but just like any car keep things organized when you do it.

of course, it's a good idea to keep them organized. but who said I have good ideas. I have a good mind for puzzels so I shouldn't have any problems there.
The problem with the head is that it cracked from overheating.
Would I be able to use a head off of a 6m or 7m or will only a 5m work?
Also, would the same tranny be used (well bolt pattern ateast) between a 5m,6m, and 7m?

6M head will work, since it's practically identical.
7M head will fit & slightly work. Only problem is that the 7M head is a 24valve head, while the 5M/6M head is a 12valve. And the tops of the 5M/6M pistons have valve reliefs for the 12valve head. I'm still not sure yet if when the timing belt dies, if putting on the 7M head turns the top end of the motor into a interference motor (has this been explained yet in another post already?? I can't remember).
5M/6M trannys will be the same. At least in North America, the W58 5-speed, and the A43DL/A43DE Automatic will work fine on your 5MGE. A W58 from a RA Celica will also work, just swap out the bellhousing from the R series motor, to one from a M series motor.
A W58 from a 7MGE should work fine. Same I believe for the A340E Automatic. The R154 5-speed from a 7MGTE will also work, but it uses a different clutch design, thus you will need a completely different clutch. Plus a R154 is overkill if you are just staying w/ a 5MGE/6MGE. If you are doing a 7MGTE upgrade, and making mad amounts of HP, then a R154 would be a good upgrade.
HTH.

So the blocks are the same between the 5,6,and 7m?
Would it be possible to convert the 5m into a 7m-ge by changing the head and all valves? Maybe a few other things that may have to be changed to accomidate a beefier head, such as pistons?
Am I talking out of my ass here or is this feasible?
Actualy, that looks like alot of work in itself. Maybe I should just get the 7m-gte and not worry about the 5m.
Oh boy, medula badidea is coming around.
CJSREDPRA
12-13-2004, 05:38 PM
Nope,
Adding a 7M head to a 5M shortblock does NOT turn your motor into a 3.0L 7M. Crank, rods & pistons are slightly different as well (bore x stroke is not the same as a 5M).
Best thing to do, is to ACTUALLY buy a 7M.

Dang.......... I wish I could have planned that out a little better, like in the summer away from christmas. Oh well, I guess my main concern should be tearing it apart to make sure the car is perfect before worrying about upgrading.
Dang. I knew this was gonna happen. Oh well, I'm gonna have to save up and get me a 7m-gte. I want to see the look on Hondy Boy's face :o when they hear the turbo spool up :D .... I can't wait.

it might be a good idea to post in the wanted section if you need a new head.
alot of the guys here already made the 7m conversion and might have some spare stuff laying around for the 5m..... plus you might be able to get one off a cressi..... i think there is another forum for those around the internet somewhere.

id suggest the $300 dollar car if the rust isnt bad, part out the engine and find a 7mgtehopefully u could be done b4 summer!

Naw man, cash is strapped (why ese would I be getting a $300 car?). I hate rust. It's cancer to a car. There's amost no way you can complety rid the rust without it coming back. It sucks.
I woud like to get a 7m-gte just to see the faces on some of the Honda Boy's faces. I woud get alot of emotional peasure out of that. Amost orgasmic. I'll post the video whenever it's done.
I also noticed me L key only works when it wants to, so if a word doesn't look right, add a L. Man I need a new keyboard.

Get all the rust, repace/repair head. Get the car painted. Make sure it's running fine. Keep it on the road for the summer. Then the next winter get a hod of a motor and al that junk, do that swap while I'm ripping apart interior do make that nice and new.
I was thinking about a nice light blue pearl, silver flake. Maybe 2 white racing stripes up the middle. Have the same type of pattern inside with the strips running through. I think it'd look bad ass. Get either white, gold, or gunmetal rims.
I already have a stereo and all that jazz in my truck so I think I'll just put it into the car.
I may do some stuff to the suspension since I like to throw my rigs into corners, but that all depends on if I like the handling.
But first off is getting it running and rust free.
I can't wait.

there will be rust in the cylinders if water got in there when the hg went and head cracked. youll need a whole new motor or rebuild the bottom end when you replace the head. the cylinders would need bored and new pistons installed. also the 5m and 6m heads are the exact same head.

I'll see how it looks when I get it apart. I may just be in for a head, hopefully. But there is a car up the road with a 5m in it just 20 minutes up the road.
I'm in for some fun.

Good to see another atlantic Canadian on the site. Rather than buy a new head for the car it might be cheaper to order a 6mge motor from A1JDM. Unless you find a decent priced one at a local wrecking yard. If Nova Scotia is anything like Newfoundland that will be hard to come by. If you havent already make sure to carefully inspect for rust as these cars if left sitting outside (especially in our climates) will rust. Main areas to look at are the hatch and the rear wheel wells

I do plan on checking for rust, I'm a too firmiliar of it (you shoud see my truck). The body's of Toyota's are made of (sad to say) flimsy steel. So they do rust and rot a little more easily. I have been tod by a few people that the body is in good shape, or ateast was when the head got bown on it.
The car has been sitting for the past year or more (outside) and I do know of a place that will do any bodywork I ask for (You know these areas, who you know). It will cost me, but not much more then the supplies.

Don't bother getting a new head. I'd just buy a whole new motor... In fact that's what I did with my car. It had a bad rod bearing and was knocking pretty good in one of the cylinders when I picked the car up for $700. I bought a fairly freash 6MGE and just finished it a month ago. Now I've got more power than a 5MGE and it'll last me another 200,000 miles. And the engine swap came to a total cost of about $1,300. So, my car is worth $2,000 to me.

Where are you guys finding these $300 dollar Celica Supra. I can't even find one for $1000 here. There is a Celica Supra here in a Junk yard that sell the head fro 76 buck. But you have to pull it. The car is in good condition. I think it got rear ended because the person that work there said the rear is not good. If you want I can go and pull it and see if you want it. Pm if you are intested.

I know i could sell you a head for 50 bucks or so (cdn) But it probably isn't worth the shipping for ya. You could just get one at a junkyard for 100 bucks or so. I know that's what i would do if i was strapped for cash and was planning on upgrading soon anyways. I have never had a problem with any of my heads, and i have probably 5 or 6 of em. Hell i would give you one, basically for 50 bucks i am, i just want money for my time and stuff. But i recommend scouring the pick your parts junkyards first. And maybe you can get complete engine for a good price if you look around. It's much easier to change engines than heads.

Thanks for the offer on the basicaly free head. But you guys don't understand the whole area around here. I have NEVER EVER seen a toyota in a scrap yard. Ever. I've been to many looking for parts for my truck.
The thing is I just need a car. I'm sick of always having the truck ready to roll and then somebody says, "Dude, you got a truck, help me move this, help me move that.". Then I turn around, give them the thumbs up with the left hand, and deck them with the right.
I have been born and raised on Toyota's (considering I know some people that can't find the dipstick), but the part about labour isn't bad, I know people that will guide me through the work, if worse comes to worse, I can aways seek opinions here about what I should do with the motor and what not.
I think right now my biggest concern is rust and any other form of rot that there is on the vehicle (I have other people that can guide me through this, spending the last number of years in the car business). I can aways get a bigger motor, money doesn't seem to be a factor for me, I want it, I get it. Like williamb82 said, there may be rust in the cylinders, so I'm up for a new motor anyway.
But hey, keep opinions rolling in guys, thanks for the help. I owe you guys, :humpleg: .

Dang this thing is in pretty good shape, except fot the lack of a working motor and some rust in the doorjambs by the hinges.
The driver's seat has a slight rip in it but that's nothing big.
There's some rust on the underside of the hood right by the latch, it seems only cosmetic.
The tires still have air and look like they are round, not flat on some spots.
I still didn't look through the whole thing, but I'm getting there. I'll update.

03-09-2005, 10:27 PM
Alright, so, I realized that these keys could have passed through everybodies hands. Would it be cheap to go to toyota and get them to change all the key holes up for a different key?
Also, I forgot to add, I got it for $100 less, so $200.
stevrock
03-18-2005, 01:18 AM
Alright, hatch is in great shape, easily fixed with no problems. The spoiler had been ripped off of it and the holes were just left there in the elements. And the hatch is pretty much perfect.
The floor in the hatch will most likely have to be fixed, I could bend it when I put pressure on it.
The motor is screwed, he left the head off of it and the whole inside of the block is rust, so new motor going in from........... another 82 supra up the road.
The body is in pretty near perfect shape, a few little spots. The hood is rotted on the bottom in the front, hopefully fixable.
All and all, looks like this project will come together nicely, with the keys and locks/ingition from the parts car, maybe a FG hood mold from the other hood, I'll be in business with a good running car.
Man I'm lucky.
stevrock
03-21-2005, 05:04 PM
Alright, maybe not that lucky. First off, I'd like to say that the work to repair rotted metal is in my price range, green light is a go for the car to be given it's refit.
The piece of metal underneath, just past where the motor suport bars go (not the subframe) is rotted out, it's only the floor support, fixable.
All new floor because last jackhole decided to put in styrofoam insulation between side skirts and rocker panel's.
It doesn't really need anyhting in the line of body work, but it is going to be painted after new brakes, engine, etc are put on, then I can actually drive it around.
I'll keep the updates coming for you.
stevrock
03-26-2005, 07:21 PM
Car interior is completly stripped. Seats are getting recovered.
Floor is bad around the edges, a few spots need some patching. Carpet was a comlete disaster, need a carpet kit.
Found a few spots where some a$$hat used rivets, all of them are getting drilled out and replaced with good metal, with real welds.
The windows are going to have to come out so any areas in the seals or covered by the windows can be fixed.
On the upside, I now know how to take out all of the windows except for the windshield.
I wish I hadda taken some pictures of it.
I'll update sooner or later. The floor and body are being started in the next week or two, and the brake are slowly starting to uncease themselves with all of the moving in and out of the garage.
In around the tail lights aren't bad, a few spots here and there, nothing major.
In the door jambs and door post there could be some work, but all of that will be fixed with the body.
All that, my hand in it plus a piantjob, $1400CDN. Not too shabby.
PS: Never get somebody that's scared of spiders to help strip a sitting car.

Alright, so I made the payment to get the body of the car ready for paint and street legal to the point of passing inspection. Good start.
I also asked the body guy about fixing the hood, while bringing up that somebody on here was talking about making a rear hatch. He said it wouldn't be too difficult. So I asked about making the hood and he said, "It would be alot less work to make the hood then to fix the one you got." Good news, maybe he'll be up for making some OEM FG hoods for sale.

Hell, that's all I do on my days off, drink coffee. A wingman wouldn't hurt.
For me to make a round trip through the mainland it would cost me an easy $200 on gas.

No pictures you say?
I drive all the way out there, and the friggin' batteries in the camera died on me :bad-word:
So, right now (I'm not out there) they are welding in the pieces of the floor, and I'm guaranteed to see it, you know why? I don't have any carpet, the old stuff was all rotted, so now I gotta find me a carpet kit.
I'll update after I search around for carpet after I inspect my new floor.

All that after I checked the scrapped cars in the merchant while picking up $5 of gas and a bottle of pop.

Well, long story short, project supra has been put on hold, I'm not working right at the moment because of an injury (I caught my thumb in a pinch roller, lost the nail) and I have to worry more about my truck that is already on the road to keep it on the road.
I'm hoping to be back to work soon so I can get some more parts for the car and get some more work done to it.
Seems like there's going to be more work needed then originaly thought.
