I need to find out of any of you see this error message...

If your browser does not support meta redirection please click here

...when you are navigating the forum.

If you do see that error, please post in this thread and give me the following info: operating system you use browser and version (Internet Explorer 6, Mozilla Firefox etc) how you connect to the internet (dialup, cable, dsl) briefly what steps you took to make the error happenPHPBB.com doesn't have a workable fix yet for this problem, I tried applying their "suggested" fix...and it made it impossible for people to log on. It has something to do with how cookies are handled and I'm still reading to see if there is a patch that actually works.

Feedback would be really great guys....thank you!

Guess who ran into this first??????

I use AOL dial up and access the forum with Internet Explorer.

First couple of times I signed on everything was great and way faster, then all of a sudden this message started coming up and speed slowed way down....

Like Steve mentioned, He tried a fix and neither of us could even sign on. If anyone else sees this error message appear while surfing please let him know so that He can try to figure out what is causing it.

Only time I see the message with IE is whenever I click on view posts since last visit and then click on a post. Any other time it doesn't happen.
However, if I sign in on AOL it happens with every single transaction.

Occasionally, I'll get on in the morning and click on "view posts since last visit" and I'll get the message "no posts met your search criteria". This happened this morning. I've been assuming it's a cookie-based issue (signing on from different machines, etc.).

I've never seen the message in Stephen's post above. Sorry to 'jack the thread, but just FYI.

OS: Linux (various distros depending on which box I'm on at the moment)
Browser: Mozilla Firefox (0.9x, 1.0)
'net access: DSL at home, fractional T1 at work

I get the 'redirect error' (Then it successfully redirects me to the right spot)

System Specs as follows.

WinXP SP2
Mozilla Firefox v0.9.3
Cable Access from home

Anytime I click on the 'new' posting icon beside a thread so I jump straight to the new stuff in a 12 page thread. (Thread length doesn't matter happens whether it's 2 messages in or 40)

So far it looks like it's just a brief flash on the screen, and it only seems to happen at certain times. I'm still researching the "fix" and I hope to have this settled this evening.

Meanwhile...is it really annoying you guys, or can you live with it a little bit? :D

Thanks much for the feedback, I appreciate it.

I've seen it a couple times.
Very brief, I don't even have time to read it.

Debian Unstable
Firefox 1.0 / Galeon
Cable through SMC router

It doesn't bug me, It's rare, and basicly just a brief flash of white

I did some playing around, and reading.
The only reliable way I can find to make it happen is login and going to the newest post in a thread.

Reading the source of phpbb, It uses the same function for every redirect, so my theory is that we only see this message when the server has to think briefly.
I think you could probably comment out the visible part of it and have a breif flash of white, with no text, but the your having to run the risk of a browser that can't run on the forum.

I hope that makes some form of sense, I'm going to bed now, I have to finish shopping in 3 hours.

Well....

I played around w/ 2 of the 5 workstations that we have here in our work area.....

I did get the message to pop up on my usual PC that I use all of the time. OS: Windowz XP Pro, SP2. Browser: IE 6.0. Connection: T1. It did pop up several times as I was surfing around the different forums.

I then got the message to pop up on one of our older machines. I only saw it pop up after I signed in, then when I signed out. Didn't see it at any other time. This machine: OS: Windowz 95 (don't ask, long story as to why we still have a PC that has this OS). Browser: IE 5.5. Connection: T1.

We have 2 other PC's that are running the same setup as the 1st one mentioned, then we also have a 5th desktop that is running Windowz 2000 Pro, and the browser is also IE 6.0. I'll have to play around w/ the 2000 machine later & see what happens. These other 3 also have T1 connections.

(Edit).. 12/25, 01:30 AM PST. I also got the message while using my GF's PC at her place. OS: Windowz XP Home, SP2. Browser: IE 6.0. Connection: Dial Up. Same amount of frequency as the 95 machine (only saw it 2x).

(Edit).. 12/25, 09:05 AM PST. I just now tried this on the 2000 Pro machine here @ work. Same thing (appears when I login & logout).

If your browser does not support meta redirection please click here

---------------

Ok...

I had a little chat with a support guy with phpBB.com and discussed the error message we're seeing, and at first he tried to tell me that it's just "an error message resulting in an incompatibility with Microsoft IIS on our server and the web browsers running in Win XP environment" so I got more curious...

Me: "Ok, so do we NEED to see that redirect notification that is coded in the functions.php file? It's irritating me."

His reply: "Well, no...it's not crucial - we just put it there so people would know they were being redirected via META tag redirect".

Me: "That's stupid, that's like saying ' Ok...I'm gonna breath now....ready? ' " (and then I inhale)

His reply: "That's true too, good point".

Me: "So if I REM that statement out because it's bugging me, what's the impact? Anything at all?"

His reply: "Well, there isn't any impact it's just a notification"

Me: "That's sorta what I figured. Thank you."

---------------

So...I edited the file and uploaded it in place of the old functions.php file - my question to you guys is...

Do you see the message anymore at all?

Hmm I get it as well but now I just can't read the post that have been posted since last visit. :(
So I would have to read each section seperately.?? to much work.

What the heck are you talking about? Can you be a little more clear please?

Dzone, what I changed has NO bearing on that function. I just tested the "view posts since last visit" function and it works perfectly.

You shouldn't be getting any redirect error message of any kind. I've asked 10 people and they've all said it's officially "gone". Including Leslie who gets online with AOL.

If you're having a problem, please going into your browser options and delete your cookies. Then close the browser....reopen it and come back to the forum and log on normally.

Ok now its all good
I was having problems viewing the "view posts since last visit"
Everytime I clicked there, it went nowhere, I used Real-players web browser and Explorer..
But now its working fine for me.

Funny thing is that, I did nothing, but as long as it works
sorry for not being clear. :pat:
