having a brain fart here. Exhaust gas in the radiator would cause a carbonish build up on the radiator cap right? but how does exhaust leak into the radiator. From a BHG right?

Thats about the only way I could see it happening.
To verify use a CGI Combustible Gas Analyzer which checks for CO/Co2 or products of combustion (exhaust gas analyzer would work as well)
or ph paper a BHG should read a low ph (acidic)
and you might see bubbles at the radiator neck with the engine running.
IIRC SnapOn makes a BHG test kit as well maybe others.

how do you know you have exhaust fumes in the radiator?
I have a yellow paste inside the radiator, but I have never seen black carbon deposits. As far as I know the yellowish deposits are normal.
If you have a BHG, you will probably feel the difference in the engine.
You can do what AJ said, and use a gas analyzer. You could probably just take it to any shop and they would do it for lik $10 or something. Or you might see the bubbles coming up from the rad when you have the rad cap off and the engine running.

also run a compression check on all cylenders, a dead hole in one or more cyls would be a good start, if your sparkplugs are really fouled, and or (super squeekey clean im told) thats a start, if your cooling system seems to presurize uber-fast (im talkin like less than 10 mins into a cold dead start) your definatly showing signs, if cooling system components seem to start failing one after another, (thats a sign of prolonged headgasket failure)
