My car is electrical gremlin city so heres the deal. Every time I hit the left turn signal with the headlights on the high beams come on. Am I to assume that the multi switch is bad or is there more to it? Another thing every time I hit the brakes my parking lights and dash lights come on and with the headlights on I have no brake lights. I know I ask alot of questions I just never get a day off so when I do I want my ducks in a row so I can knock out a bunch in one shot.

lets see here, I'm no genieous but im gonna try to chip in beause at least im not laughing at the problem and not being happy that its not my own,

if your highbeams come one with the turn signals, you could have a bad multifunction switch, or its a possability that a tweaker was trying to get your turn signal to come on as a parking light, and just accidently spliced into the highbeam portion of the headlight wiring,
same goes with the brake lights, a tweaker could have ate up the wiring attempting to remedy a no tail light problem, and insted it backtracks the wiring and turns everything else on

or if you have an 85-86 it could be in the stock alarm wiring, now you could be lucky and like me not have it work at all alltogeather, or water could have gotten in from god knows where, and when it messes with the alarm it has a amost completly likely tendency to make all lighting go haywire

the best piece of info i can offer, is KISS Keep It Simple, Stupid to check all of the obvious first before probing deeper into the wonders of mayhem

check all bulbs, be that they are in good working order and correct for the application

(an 1156 single filiment single contact bulb looks almost exactly the same as an 1157 dual filiment dual contact bulb, now, if one of these 1156 bulbs is used in one of the brake light sockets, its a good possability that it is bridging the brake terminal in the socket to the tail socket in the terminal, causing a backtrack in the wriring,

check all fuses for blown or evidence of tamering,

check all relays for functionality, i like to do this by turning a circut on, then pulling and replacing the relay very lightly to feel and hear for the conforming click that it makes, if it makes no click, tap it with a screw driver to see if its sticking, if it works after that replace it.

then check for corrosion in sockets, plugs, and harness couplings,

pinch points in wiring,

chase shorts ect.

thats the end of shawns crash course in automotive wiring,
hope this helps as its beats being laughed at[/i]

Update--Screwed with the damn thing yesterday and if i lifted the stalk slightly while the left turn signal was on it went back to lows. So I am assuming bad multiswitch. I will check the bulbs asap and get back to y'all on the dashlights w/brakes problem. Thank you everyone.

Checked the bulbs yesterday and bingo 1156 in 1157 socket on both sides!! Switched them out and problem solved. Except for the turn signal high beam thing but my guess is the switch on that. Thank you rat rod for your help your advice made this pronlem really friggin easy to figure out.

i work at the local autoparts store and i see shit like this all the time, just be glad that it didnt short, and heat up the contacts, so that they bury themselves in the plastic base of the bulb socket

to properly fix it i would get the entire combonation switch assy new from toyota....it will last another 20 years, its not the stalk thats bad....its a little switch at the base of the stalk....you could possible take it all apart and clean it.....goodluck.

When i made the previous post I just assumed that doing the bulbs wouldnt fix that.
