View Full Version : Just bought a 1990 mk3 turbo
Supra7

Hello all, I found a 90 supra turbo for 6000 dollars with 88000 miles...mods are listed in sig. Anyways the car is beautiful it has a flawless body and paint, not to mention 18 inch wheels with new tires. Everything runs very smooth and the ride quality as excellent, so I assume the car has been well maintained. I am an RX7 guy so this piston thing is foreign to me and I need some help troubleshooting here, first of all I found a small oil leak(a small puddle about the size of a quarter after the car is shut down) which is beneath the oil pan. Secondly the car sputters under light acceleration, but under hard acceleration it revs smoothly. Also the car dies randomly, the idle is normally pretty good but every once in a while the car will sputter and die after I let off the throttle coming to a stop and sometimes just during idle. As far as I know the headgasket has never been replaced. Any help is appreciated

if you dont know a car mechanically, you shouldnt have bought it. buy a service manual and start looking at things. piston engines have a lot more moving parts than rotaries, so be careful, esp when messing with the timing.

If that's the case then 99% of the used cars out there wouldn't be sold. Nathan there's nothing wrong with not knowing a car; you just have to be willing to put some effort into it.
Your oil drip; do you get any when the car is running?? How often do you get it?? Is it every time you start it/shut it down...or only when it's been siting for a while?
I strongly suggest you get yourself a TSRM (toyota service and repair manual) for your year supra. If you don't mind priniting a few hundred pages then today is your lucky there; there's an online manual of a 90 MKIII here:
http://www.cygnusx1.net/supra/library/TSRM/
Off the bat I'd guess TPS; but I've seen those symptoms too many times and it isn't always TPS. So grab the online TSRM; grab your multi-meter and start checking all your electrical components including wires; coilpack etc. This will take your just over an hour and will give you a better idea of where you stand.
I'm not sure who sells it in the U.S. but get yourself of blown head-gasket test kit (that's if you're not sure if it's blown). If not go to your local mechanic and have him test it; chances are if it's never been replaced that she's couldn blow any day.
If all else fails pull out the 7mgte and throw in a 5m...she'll run forever :joke:
Good luck...oh...btw...not that it matters cause we love all supra lovers; but this forum targets 1/2gen supra's...but there are a lot of people with extensive knowledge of mk3's here and the atmosphere is friendly...cheers.

Hopefully its just the drain plug gasket.
Welcome and good luck!

Good find on the car. Oil leak - - - could be oil pan, or one of the following seals on the engine:
Cam seals
Front or rear crank seal
Oil pump driveshaft seal
Valve cover gaskets
Oil pan seal
I'm not sure on the hesitation, but TPS, plugs, wires, are possibilities. The "vent to atmoshpere" blow off valve is probably the culprit for your car dying at lights, stop signs, etc. Good luck!

Actually one of the reasons why I was so interested in this car is because the car is near mint condition....It actually came with the TSRM and the electrical wiring manual. It also has factory floormats, all factory body pieces and aero pieces. I'm not stupid so I wouldn't just buy any car, it took a while of searching before i decided on this.
The oil drips everytime the car is shut down, I just noticed it yesterday for the first time. There is no oil on the front or sides of the engine it is mainly on the bottom and around the oil pan (maybe just the pan gasket?).
So then should I pull my S-AFC from my RX7 and put it in the Supra? It has some setting to resolve the open vented BOV issues at idle, I just didn't want to have to go splicing into my new car yet!
Also I'm the king of driving POS cars so I don't mind having a few problems, other than these small details the car is an absolute blast to drive and feels like an almost new car.

Yeah, I looked at some other supra forums and this one appeared to be the best choice, the rest of them either suck and have no info, or won't let me register.

Pray it's just the drain plug; if it's the pan gasket it's not a fun job :(.
Personally; I have a hks bov on my mk3 vented to the atmosphere...i just make sure I don't put it in neutral after the bov goes off; ya it's a pain; but you get use to it. NEven if you do...blip the throttle for a second and she'll be fine. I personally wouldn't put the afc on that car just for that...kind of a waste; and looking at your mods I would say that it's totally not necessary...just my :twocents:

Welcome;
I know it sounds dumb but also check your oil filter.... I've had that thing give me a scare before and then make me feel dumb when I reached down, tightened the thing back up and the drip went away.
Also... Im not a turbo buy but... could a turbo leek also cause those probs? aka lean condition? I could be way the hell off on that one.
