Took the Redpra in for the every-other-year ritual today. Got a pleasant surprise:
HC (PPM) CO (%) NOx (PPM)
MAX Measured MAX Measured MAX Measured
15mph: 130 49 0.81 0.04 1115 0 (Zero!)
25mph: 105 25 0.61 0.05 945 0 (Zero!)
I've never had a car show zero NOx emissions on one of these tests. I know his machine is working, because the guy before me flunked the NOx test. Car is running really clean. Wish the Blupra ran that clean (it barely passed a few months ago; HCs were at the high end of normal).
Now I need to find time to slap on the Thorley header I just picked up from Flyin' Hawaiian...!

And this is running on alcohol I take it? I'm no chemist, but I think it would be impossible to have zero nox with what is it 78% nitrogen in the atmosphere. Usually when our cars fail, its on nox and I have had to retard timing on my supras to about 4 below for the emissions test every year since Texas started ASM testing just to get the nox down. Of course they run like crap, but they pass if barely. Their machine must've crapped out just after the last car. I'm just finding that hard to believe. Another thing I've learned too, is that stations are supposed to calibrate their equipment and many don't do it on schedule. It doesn't take much for the machine to be way off.

Sounds like she's running good Bob :) You ever replace that 02 sensor? Hows the gas milage now?

No, car's not running on alcohol...a few people I know are, though. :-P I have a hard time believing that NOx reading, too. Car's running great. Anyway, just to prove I'm not jerking your chains, here's a scan of the report.
Seamus: Oxygen sensor? Never had to replace that...it's the same one the car came down with. I was going to put in a high-flow cat before the test, but obviously I didn't need to do that....but will be swapping it in soon along with the Thorley header I just picked up. Gas mileage isn't bad...I get about 440-450km (freeway) until the gas gauge starts on the last bar.

I just went in NJ here and I just passed. I forgot the #s but I made it by about 20 points on one and 15 on the other. To run 0 and 0 I wish the person that did your test could do mine. Sorry but no way you got zero reading. Please dont take offense to that but the person doing your test had to of made a mistake

Hey - I said that I have a hard time believing it, too. But I'm not going to bitch about it and have them repeat the test!!
Anyway, just for shits and grins, I found the result from two years ago...43 PPM. Not zero, but damn good, given that max. passing is 900-1100.
LOL.....!
Guys and Gals, finally got my first rear wheel dyno smog test including NOX testing and PASSED with ease!!
My NOX was under average on the idle 332 and a bit over the average on the 25mph test.
What I learned is if you have to go to a Test Only Smog Station you are eligible for up to $500 from the State of Calif. if the vehicle doesn't pass????? So there is NO need to PRE-TEST if you have to go to a Test Only Smog Station.
See the link below to the BAR Consumer Assistance Program page for more information.

Test-Only Eligible – Certain vehicles are required to have their Smog Checks done at stations that perform only tests, and no repairs. If your vehicle’s DMV registration renewal notice requires a Test-Only inspection, your vehicle may qualify for up to $500 in repair assistance. Qualified consumers must pay the first $100 towards diagnosis and/or emissions-related repairs.

On the subject of emissions, I guess I'm kinda confused. When I had my black car smogged in Mass, as long as she passed I didn't care what the actual readings meant. But I still hvae my emissons test paper, and they read it GPM not PPM...what's the difference? Also it doesnt show at what mph etc etc

Not that it really matters, as my white car is a complete gross polluter, BUT it's emissions exempt in Mass now for being over 20....just curious about something I've chosen to ignore, ha.

AHH,
The Joys of not having Emissions Testing. All My Emissions stuff is sitting in a box somewhere so if someone needs something I may have it. Except for a CAT, don't know what happened to the original exhaust.

Somethings not right I've never seen any car hit zero on NOx. My dad just smogged a 2003 or something Civic with 5k miles and it had like 20 ppm. Especially when your HC and CO #s are so high. So which smog station was this? (Rushes to put engine back in car and drive to SoCal  )

Well, I thought the HC (49, 25) and CO (0.04, 0.05) numbers were pretty damn good. As I said above, though, I don't buy the NOx numbers either. But I'm not complaining.

hmmm that milage is still a little on the low side Bob. A new 02 sensor might not be a bad idea, but I seriously doubt thats it if your emmisions are so good. My guess is the usual, dirty injectors. One gets a bit more out of spec then the others, so the others have to overfuel to keep the a/f ratio stoich. When my 85 was stock I could get 500 to 600 per tank easily on road trips. My first 85 which ran like a dream managed 700 once, thats 28mpg. My old 82 did that once too, but thats with a 3.72 rear end.
