View Full Version : How much room is there between the engine and the hood?

Obviously it is really hard to measure it with the bonnet down!, and have no idea when the bonnet is up. So rather than trying to get xray vision, I thought i would ask some people here.
hehe, anyway, I am asking cos I will be going turbo on my 5M, and wondering how much room i will have to run intercooler piping etc, cos I see the 7M engines have sorta flattened piping. Any idea on what is a good diameter for the piping? I am getting a MkIII intercooler.

why not take a long piece of something and lay it across the angine bay and measure it. it seems too easy.

I mean between the engine and the bonnet. I dont want things rattilng or knocking on the bonnet when driving,

 oh jeez. measure from the top of the engine to the top of whatever your laying flat across the top of the fenders...

 umm, yeah, true. Hehe, I am at uni at the moment researching my project, so I guess all my brain power went into that rather than thinking properly, fair enuff then, I will go do that.

Its cool. Now I know the answer to the question, I do wonder why I asked it. I keep trying to see under the bonnet as i closed it trying to get an idea of the distance, and it kept getting really dark. I am just an idiot.
Hehe, I think I need to delete this post so my shame can be hidden.

Another goofy way of doing this, but it works....

Find a piece of clay. Wad it up into a big ball & measure it.

Locate the 1 place in the engine compartment, where the bonnet is closest to the motor. Set lump of clay on motor & close bonnet.. Open bonnet. Take new measurement of lump of clay....

Don't forget to take into account the thickness and placement of the hood structural cross members.

When that girl bends over I forget my name.

Theres a tiny bit over 3 inchs of clearance from the topmost part of the valve covers, to the bracing on the hood. I know this because I've made a custome intake pipe with 3 inch piping and I've had to cut the heat shield back a little for clearance on some mk2s to get it to fit without rubbing.

So i would be ok running 2.5" or 2" piping? What have most poeple used for turbo applications?

2.5 inch seems to be very common with supras and many other turbo setups. If there is any way at all you can get another intercooler besides the mk3, this would be wise. The factory intercooler on the mk3 is the "red-headed step-child" of all factory ic's,terrible flow rate, pressure drop and a very low heat exchange capacity. Try conquest-starion 88-89,turbo ford probe or mazda 626 fmic if at all possible.

ah, william, i have heard many who disagree with you.
do you have any sources i could compare and get a real result?

also, how is the intercooler off an audi?
i got one cheeep (like less than 5 bucks) and its in great shape, was just wondering if it might be better than the mkIII one ive got.

That's the ticket! Works like a charm!

Works great for doing cylinder head work, too.

(I have a huge bag of grey modeling clay in the fridge 8-) )

I have already got the ic, so hopefully it isnt too bad. But i will see what happens. At least I can use it to get the piping running ok etc, and deal with a bigger better one another time.

My theory...

Sets camera down on location where it's aimed at top of turbo & bottom of hood.

Goes to "menu" on said camera & sets the 20 second timer.

Releases timer, closes hood, waits for camera flash, indicating camera took picture.

Wha La... Instant picture!!!!

Sounds simple to me

I test fitted the engine that day. Closed the hood very gently. The car was on jack stands. Went under the car and sticked my arm in the engine bay. I made like 10 pictures and this one was the best.
