Yes I did a Search.....My 85 needs a new fuel pump and the Haynes is less than detailed. Anyone that has dropped their tank have any pointers, like acess to the filler pipe and it's removal, etc. Is it best to remove mud flap / flare and tank shield on pass. side first, etc. Thanks in advance

remove the rubber boot around the filler, replace the cap with a plastic bag (the cap can get stuck if you don't).
Yes remove the plastic protector in the wheel well (mud flap can stay).
Disconnect fuel sender and pump before you lower the tank.
Release fuel pressure, open the 3 lines and drop it.

I forgot if its 2 or 1 of the three fuel lines is/are a pain to unbolt.best to use a little PB blaster and 2 correst size wrenches. Alos be sure to note the way the pump assy. comes out, its a real puzzle to put it back in!!
While you have the tank off, its a good idea to change out the rubber fuel lines.

Thanks to both of you for the pointers. Pulled the flare and mud flap just for fun and lightened the car by at least 5# after removing all the mud! Will have to do the others for even more weight loss!
Ya the pump was a puzzle both snaking it out and getting it to go back in. BTW I payed $208.00 for the pump, $12.00 for the pump filter and about $4.00 for the tank gasket, plus shipping. OUCH!!!!

Hey Mike "P",
Boy do I feel like a 'newbie'....I KNEW I had read that Jim King write up somewhere but it was a LONG time ago and I couldn't put my fingure on where it was I had seen it....anyway I am very lucky that this car doesn't have any of the rust problems some other parts of the country inflict on our sups. so no need for "soaking the nuts and bolts with Liquid Wrench". It was a one person job although a bit of a bitch wrassling it up the last few inches.
BTW I did the fuel filter first and compared to that sum b the tank/ pump R&R was a piece of cake!
Thanks all, now I can look forward to 100k more miles with out worrying about stalling out in the boonies.
Greg
