That's because most Toy Techs now are punk ass kids, that don't know what a 20yo engine looks like, let alone how to work on them. :runaway: :D

i resent that remark......i'm young but i'm not a punk kid......you gotta think if you want the work done from a qualified technician you're probably going to have to pay more in labor. Labor at my dealership is 70 dollars an hour....and if your doing it right you don't just replace the cam tower gaskets. You replace them as well as front seals, the throttle body seal....timing belt, maybe waterpump if its bad....valve cover gaskets...it gets up there.

and on top of that there are three mechanics that are still there that have been working on cars longer than i've been alive and charge the same......lol

ok i might get flamed on this one but im daring so here it goes: when you say its direct replacement, does tah mean i can take my old one out then put this one in with out wiring and those kind of issues. i saw that you need to use your oilpan and pick up, but does everything else come with it. im kinda new to all this, but i would like to swap mine but dont want to go 7m yet

Gera....I deal with Dealerships on a daily basis.....resent my remarks ALL YOU WANT.Flat out, most techs are just parts changers,no more,no less.I see the older guys standing over there young ass's every day, explaining the next step.....so until I personaly SEE different,my opinion won't change. That's the main reason I never went back to a dealership after working for Dodge in the mid 80's.

Now,back on topic.....Turbogoo.....you need to use YOUR engine harness at least, possibly your oil pan/pump.Direct replacement in this instance = NO CUSTOM work like the 7m/7mgte.

Sorry for the slow response time. Yes, swapping this engine in is like removing and replacing your 5mge engine.

What other parts would you be able to include/replace prior to shipment? The car I'm swapping one into is QUITE tired and poorly maintained- also, do the stock 5m oil filters work on the 6m? And what oil grade do you reccomend- I know these things change sometimes- :) Thanks, Mark W.

rabidchimp.com

I would be able to do anything prior to shipping, head rebuild, custom cams, metal head gasket w/ ARP studs, etc. What are you SERIOUS about getting done? The 5m oil filter is the same as the 6m filter. Just run 10w30 in the engine. I run Castrol in my vehicles.

I'll cc this response to your e-mail. The engine should be fine. Just remember...when you are getting ready to start the engine, pull the efu fuse, and turn the engine over with the starter, and build up oil pressure. Install EFI fuse, start it up, and go have some fun.

i heard from other members that i need to swap the 5mge oil pan and pick up and pump and put them on the 6mge. is this true? if so how do i do it. i am sure i can figure it out but is this necessary? they said it doesnt bolt up right. someone help?

CJSREDPRA
10-18-2005, 04:56 AM
Yes, this is necessary.

Standard oil pan on a 6MGE which is a center drop pan, is designed for the cars that they came in (ie: Soarer, Crown sedans, etc). Pan will not clear the crossmember on the MA Supra, which requires a front drop pan. Thus the reason why you need to reuse the 5MGE pan.

6M oil pickup is also designed for the center drop pan.... See where this is going??

Uhmmmm.... Who said "what" does not bolt up properly????

This is funny because...

WE are in san diego. We can swap the motor for you no problem, if you provide the 6M. It will go right into your auto car. Actually, if you have the engine shipped to our shop, then it will probably cost you less in freight.

6MGEs are not available in the US, therefor, they are rare for that reason. Also, the 6M was only available in two cars in Japan only, the Crown and Soarer and it was only available for like 3 or 4 years. The 6M is getting very rare even in Japan now, and the sources are dwindling. It will end up getting to the point where people will have to build there own out of the 7M block and 5M head soon.

will it pass smog in CA

yes it will, I have had many 6MGE's in previous mkii's Iv owned. All passed smog, you just have to use the 5MGE upper intake manifold and intake plenum. That is mainly because it has the EGR system still on it, the 6MGE (30000) intake plenum doesnt have any EGR system which will result in an automatic fail from a smog ref.

The 6M waiting list is VERY LONG and the availability of 6Ms is near 0 currently. I think there's probably more 6Ms over here in the US, hiding in Supras and Cressidas, than there are left in Japan anymore.

Yeah I think our general theory on that 6M is that is was more than likely a Celica XX swap. However, when I bought my 6M ECU, it was for a M/T car, so you never know...

but the vast majority of all 6Ms are going to be from an auto Soarer or Crown.

Sure is!

All ya gotta do is remove the flex plate from the back of the crankshaft and install a pilot bearing and flywheel.

The engines themselves aren't different whether it's mated to a manual or automatic transmission. It's the parts that go in between them that matters! :)

I read on one of your posts that some 5mge parts are needed to be installed on a 6m to use it in a MK2. So, if I wanted to put one in an MK1 would I need a donor 5mge engine for parts or could a 5me donate what I need?

Depends on if you are keeping the Mk1 ecu or not.

With the Mk1 ecu you will need a 82 AFM and 82 vac advance distributor as far as 5mge parts to run a 6m.

With a 85 MkII ecu and wiring you wouldn't need many 5mge parts at all to run the 6m.

How much would a shop want to swap out a 83 engine, for a 6m any ideas

You would have to talk to shops about that. A WAG (Wild A$$ Guess) would put you in the $1000-$3000 bracket for an engine swap like that from most automotive shops, and that would just be swapping the engine, you would have to pay extra for all the parts needed.

rabidchimp.com
10-23-2009, 02:40 PM
I charge $825 for the swap (not including the engine), plus materials......coolant, oil, silicone, brake cleaner, etc, and miscellaneous gaskets. When you call a shop for a quote, just ask about the price for a standard engine swap. Let them know they'll be swapping the oil pan, and intake manifold. Scubarusteve, its a pretty straightforward swap.

Has anyone Ever got a 6M shipped into Canada?

Of course (if not living in the middle of nowhere in Ft McMurray like Dean) you could have it shipped to the US side of a border crossing and run down there and pick it up and avoid GST, no, you'd never do that. There are companies at many of the crossings that accept drop shipments. (basically mailboxes - you have to contact them in advance) - then what you do when crossing back into Canada is your business (not that I'm suggesting you not declare merchandise while returning to Canada). I have no ideas what the penalties are if you are caught. Plus shipping to somewhere in MT is much cheaper than a mile north in AB. (I'm sure of this on small packages - not positive how much difference on freight) - your decision. At a minimum, if you are near the border, compare the difference in shipping charges and consider picking up "south of the border."

I'm not Canadian, don't cross the border all that much either, so I'll defer to folks that do. I do know sometimes the Canadian Customs folks can be jerks (US too).

Regardless, Rabidchimp has shipped quite a few 6MGE engines to Canada.

Not raping your thread rabid, actually trying to help you sell. I have bought from rabid a few times, very professional and satisfying experience. I am trying to help others on CS with shipping problems (which means more sales to you) since I recently went through it myself buying supraholics 7mgte. I am about to recommend what the best shipping option that I have found so far is, keep in mind that I have no personal investment in this company and this post IS NOT an ad or endorsement! Anyways, uship.com is what I went through, and its basically a reverse auction with shippers bidding on your shipment and under cutting each other until you finally select one. I had very good results with them, but make sure you get the insurance you need. Many shippers only offer $0.60 per LB on stock insurance.... well that didn't cut it for me and $14 extra covered me for $1500. I had my motor shipped from New Hampshire to Ohio (14 hour drive) with lift gates on both end and $1500 insurance for $248. They also employ the ebay rating style system to help you feel more comfortable in your choice of shipper.

Not really, considering he has to prep everything for the hassle of shipping sometimes. Pretty sure it's not some astronomical number being made.

85SilverWedge
08-23-2010, 02:12 PM
I think we're viewing his statement differently. Charging for prep/packaging is normal, inflating actual shipping after that fact so that you make a few bucks extra on a service you're not even providing, is different. That's what I took from it.

Let's not make this a discussion in his forum. I reacted to his statement and inserted my 2 cents, I'm not here to make it any bigger than that.

Just my opinion about my personal ethics and my own business pratices.

Places like eBay are the same way, you see some sellers so obviously making money on shipping, and some that just charge actual shipping. I choose who to buy from and who not to, as do you.

I just reacted when I percieved it to be stated as a 'normal' part of (all) business in general, to which I'm in disaggreement.

Peace. I'm out.

are you rebuilding OLDer engines, or putting together new ones, (mileage)? I also wanted to know what the price would be on shipping to Northern California. Ive already started to set aside a few bucks, will be saving for another engine, the one i got has 248,000 miles on it. Ive had it for 4 weeks and so far have replaced the power steering pump, starter, and have a new radiator on order. (just read some of the older posts, it would be a to a home, 95492) It might be awhile but i look forward to oredering one from ya when i have the cash. Thanks.

Rich64N

Who knows? I suggest you google ""low mileage Japanese engine" - lots of stuff there. These are NOT new engines. That info isn't available.

I do know RC is buying 6MGE engines from Japan that have had compression tests, and is replacing the seals that usually need to be changed after 20 years. Would you prefer a drifters engine at 50K, or a limo engine at 150k.

Disclaimer: I live 15 kms from RC and know him personally.

New 6MGEs do not exist, the engine has been out of production since 1987 or 1988 IIRC. The 6MGEs RC gets usually have unknown mileage, however a lot of old japanese cars go to the junkyard with fairly low miles due to their laws/registration fees, etc. Even a 30,000 mile engine might still be crap as it has either sat in a car in the elements for months or years, or on a crate in a warehouse. Either way, it's best to have the seals replaced so it doesn't pee oil all over the place the moment it starts.

Rich64N

;746712']will you have any 6m available sometime in the next 2-4 months?

I see you have a GCE here (Gross Conceptional Error) here as to how 6MGE engines arrive in the USA (or elsewhere other than Japan). There are BIG used import engine importers, that only sell wholesale to folks like Rabidchimp. These folks also import Nissan and Mazda, etc. There aren't that many folks that want a Toyota 6MGE at the wholesale level. RC tells his supplies (Importers) that he'll buy anything they can get (or 3 engines) and 2 months later that info hits the salvage markets in Japan.

Then should an engine be bought in Japan, two months later it arrives in a US port for delivery to a wholesale engine importer. And then the importer tells a retailer like RC that it is available. (RC can tell the importer he wants the engines, but until they arrive in the USA he has no idea if/when they are available).

If you really want a 6MGE immediately, I suggest you go to Japan, hire a fixer/interpreter (some JAPAN forum members could do this actually), hit up salvage yards and with letters of credit to arrange shipment (What, your home town bank doesn't do letters of credit?). Forgot you need to register with the Dept of Homeland Insecurity first. International trade isn't simple.

No. If any wiring comes in on these engine, it's always cut. The 6M wiring harness would be a few inches too short to work in a LHD car anyway. And unless it's a setup from a Crown with KV AFM, there'd be absolutely no benefit from running the wiring.
