I had one on my 83with the blow to hell muffler(VERY LOUD) the cat barely made a defference after being lit off, so not much flow loss. I like them, pretty straight through. You can see through the mesh. Inexpensive too.

I was looking at catco CC's. The universal fit ones are way better priced than the direct fit ones. But which would be right for an non turbo automatic/

I got a universal napa one in mine. 2.5" high flow.
works fine.

CP - How much did that cost? Also does it matter if the pipe downwind is a smaller calliber than the Cat.

I think the pipe on my car is a crappy 1 3/4" or something. I'm going to replace it sometime in the future and put a flowmaster or something on it. The muffler I have on it is generic and is almost silent (which I don't want)

Also, before I shell out cash for a new cat, is there any good way to clean those things?

I worked there at the time, so it was ~$80 Canadian. I'm not sure what it would be for a walk-in.... Prob $160 Can or higher.

The hgih flow cats are on a seperate page in the book (UNX), I think mine is rated for 360 cid or something.

I got an entire new exhaust when i put it on, total cost was less than $250 Can. Basicly chopped the collecter up and welded 2.5 inch to it all the way back, cruch bent, again, Napa brand turbo muffler ($25 Can my cost).

IMO it sounds pretty nice, but I don't know what it would cost without getting employee discount.


Also, before I shell out cash for a new cat, is there any good way to clean those things?

No idea, sorry.
I just ruin the crap out of my car mosdt of the time, so nothing have time to do any building up or anything :twisted:

I gather that turbo exhaust setup are different from N/A exhausts. What makes a high performance exhaust setup for a N/A supra? Cat, muffler, pipe diameter etc. What would be a lesser but adequate setup?

What's just for turbo and too much for N/A. I want to upgrade the system without having too little back pressure.

Turbo exhaust you want to get as liuttle back pressure ater the turbo you can get, on our cars, I think 3" is the usual.
2.25-2.5 mandrel is usually the expensive version of N/A high performance exhaust.
Assuming you get rid of the backpressure, a header will make the most difference I think. The closer it is to the engine, the more you should notice it. (I think, someone correct me if I'm wrong) A high flow cat should help a lot too.
I know on my car the setup I have works really well, but I also have an odd engine... It just does things it shouldn't :P

Cheap, but they don't last (at least for me). I had one that wouldn't pass smog after 2000 miles.

I'm talking about a Catco cat. I put a new one on smogged it and passed with near 0 across the board. Two years and ~2000 miles later all the #s skyrocketed up. Replaced the cat and back to near 0 again. It still looked like new on the inside. I sold that car, so who knows if it was the same thing again. I run a Magnaflow on my current car and it doesn't smog as good as the 89k mile stocker did. I got about 3ppm of HC on a stocker vs like 20pm on the Magnaflow. This is on a motor with about 1k miles on it. If you have to do smog checks, keeping on stocker on hand to switch in isn't a bad idea IMHO.

I think I have the stocker on it. It passed with near zero's about a month ago but it gives off a smell.
I'm going to try seafoam this weekend and see if that help before I buy a new one.
I don't see why you can't just take those things off and clean them. It's not like the catalyst gets used up.
