View Full Version : Sunroof dilema

Alright, I know there's had to have been a few people around with this problem.
My 82 does not have a sunroof, so I can't use that one like I did the hatch.
My 83 is currently at the paint shop, body work completed all except for the sunroof. And I have no idea what to do.
The sunroof panel is screwed, there's no going and fixing it without doubling the price of my paint job (not really, but it need major reconstruction).
-These are my options, I could cut the skin off of the 82 and put that on the 83, but there would be alot of work to that. That and then there's the problem of it looking like there's a sunroof from inside the car.
-We could cut the roof open a little more to fit in a glass roof from an 81 celica (I think that's what it is).
-There is a scrap yad with an 85 celica, not sure if there's a sunroof in that or not, but we'll most likely try it if the dimensions are similar.
-I've already thought of a targa top, between my 2 cars it could be done, but I'm afraid after one cut is finished the car will twist like a foreign prostitue, even with proper bracing.
Anybody else have any, and I mean ANY idea's that could help me get my car back? I'm getting impatient. Please HELP ME!
TIA

targa top wont work on the mk2..not enough support for it. i do remeber a member putting a glass sunroof from like a probe or prelude or something like that but the pics looked good. search for it but im sure someone will chime in with more details.

Did you post a WANTED item for a sunroof in the WANTED section? It just seems a shame to me to abandon the possibility of a working sun roof. Well, except maybe you guys in Nova Scotia don't get enough mild sunny days to use it.

Nova Scotia is gaelic for New Scotland, think about it.
Naw, the weather only gets hot around here when I am at work. When I have my days off it goes to overcast and rainy.
I don't want to abandon the sunroof, I'd rather keep it, it lets both arms get a tan in the summer :D but it does leak from time to time (sprinkle to sprinkle) and it will help cool the car when I first get in it.
A 99 prelude in a scrap yard here.... lol.... a prelude on the road here.... lol....
Those are 2 door accords right?
Naw, seriously. It's a good thought but they are few and far between here. I did read up on it though, expecially with it being able to pop up in the back also. Maybe I should measure my mom's camry......
I was also thinking of getting a car cover until it can be replaced and keeping the car covered whenever it rains, but then I'd have a gaping hole in the roof for theives and animals. Also the part of getting cauight in rain..... I could just plywood it..... :zzzzz:
I'll update tomorrow, keep the idea's coming guys.

i don't get it. what do you need?
a sunroof panel? if so, i'm sure there are tons of "almost-good" ones that can be easily repaired.

Well it's the panel and the bracing underneath that's all rusted out. Bubbles and pitted and everything.
I guess it could be siliconed in place from the inside until I find one that is suitable for the job.... Who knows.
Yup, the whole thing. I may just cover the car and put it in storage because I plan on moving out to Alberta next month until the spring....

Hmmm, I have the same problem with my Supras; both rusty. Problem is, there is not a huge "base" of spares here in New Zealand and most of the Mk IIs with sunroofs are rusty also. I've bitten the bullet and am getting a mold made for this now. Tomorrow is the day I check with the company about how they are going.
If it all looks good, I may sell extras if there is a demand for it.

Well then, if you are selling extra's, I don't think I have much of a choice but to get in on it, I'll have to drop the cash for one. Let me know what you find out.
Thanks.

are those rusty parts replaceable? There are lots of rust free sunroofs here in california.

Shipping to New Zealand is a killer, I've checked... It will be worse for two of them. I know a few other guys here (four) who will be after a replacement as well.

well I'll have to look into my piggy bank and see if I can get one from cali for next year and just doctor this one up for the rest of this year.....

My sunroof doesn't work, so I just have the panel itself held up by four little blocks of wood, keeps it sealed, but I lost one wood block already, who knows where it went, but it does work until I have time to get it all fixed.

Alright, I told him to fix it up as best he could until next summer. Because whenever I get this car back I'll drive it for a month or 2 and then it'll be in storage anyway. I'm moving out west and I hope to find one there.
