I'm almost done finishing up my 1J install. I'm using the oem fluid fan, got it all installed and filled with Dextron, and when I started the car, the fan itself started leaking fluid. I checked and rechecked the hoses, and they're fine, so apparently it's coming out of the fan itself. Any idea's about this??? If it winds up being too much trouble, I'll just have to buy an electric fan, but if I can salvage the fan, I'd like to.

One of the first things I did when I got my 2JZ was get rid of the fluid fan, so I won't be any help.
If the fan itself is leaking I think you might be up for a replacement... they don't look like serviceable items.

The fan he's talking about actually does run off hydraulic pressure. It has its own hydraulic pump built into the water pump. This is quite different to the mechanical clutch fan found on the M series engines.

I have money it is your return line.
Unbolt the return line, 12mm
There is an o-ring under the flange, check that. Also make sure that the flange is perfectly flat. This happened on a 1j swap that I completed this weekend. The flange was all bent and I replaced it with a spare, no leaks!

Great. I will check that. I mean I guess I probably should just get an electric, but money's tight at the moment, and I just wanna get up and running. I need to start looking into some electric fans. Any suggestions?

i see no reason to get rid of the hydro fan, it works amazing, way better then an electric fan and it is free!!
in the future, best to go to the 1j section of SF, it is the most busy 1j place to ask questions...
if you ask questions here, you will get lots of replies of people who don't have a 1j guessing at the answer...

True it does free up alot of horsepower but it does not flow enough cfm. Especially when you have a/c.

alot of people have had good luck with the zirgo 3300cfm fans off ebay. its a 16in iirc and fits in the stock fan shroud. youll prolly want to space it out from the radiator a bit like the stock fan though, so itll pull air through the whole radiator and not just the 16in circle its bolted too.

Well, I took the fan out, unbolted the return line, and yes, the o-ring was the problem. I replaced it with another o-ring, filled up the fluid, and ran the car for 15 minutes with no leaks :D:D:D
Now to move on to the driveshaft and ic piping!

I didnt realize the pump was built into the waterpump, in that case it is probably better to use the stock setup rather than an electric setup. Congrats on getting it running.
I would love to see some pics when you are all finished.

I'm hoping that's gonna be soon. I will definately post a lot of pics, hopefully get some dyno #'s and 1/4 mile times too.
