Hey everyone. I am in need of some tires and so I went looking for some set of tires for my 84 p type (was hoping i could find some) but to no avail. I then went to firestone and the guy said that they dont make or stock them. He then suggested the size 215/60/14 Lemans SR. I asked him how much the whole thing would cost and total for all 4 tires and labor and whatnot the total came to 337.20. So my question to you is if it's worth it? I'm not in it for performance at all. I'm a college student that commutes and just need some reliable tires with good traction specially in the snow. Please give me your suggestions and opinions on the tires if any of you have had them in your car. I would really appreciate it thanks

One suggestion, avoid Cooper Cobras like the plague. Absolutely horrible in the rain.

I'd second that recomendation. Even when there's just mild condensation on the pavement, the traction disapears.

If they are the LaMans SR's that I'm thinking of, those are pretty crappy as well.

Something simple??? BFG Radial TA's, or the Yokohama Avid S/T's. The BFG's work well in snow, don't know about the Yokohama's. And these are still available in 225/60/14's.

I got lucky and Greg G sold me an old set of Falkin's. Best bet got to tirerack they ship out of Newark Nj or around that are so shipping will not be too expensive. Go with the yokohoma avid AT st whatever

Thanks everyone. I'm now considering the Yokohama's. Reading the reviews it has above excellent traction in what i need it for the most. Now for another stupid question is whats the diff between HR and TR and if it even matters. Thanks again guys you all rock

Those reviews for the tires are for mostly trucks that had the tires. Don't go by the reviews,go buy what left out there to buy. TR is truck rated and HR not sure about both actually. There both very hard though.

hr and tr sound like speed ratings. on tirerack.com it should have the letters and what speeds they stand for. iirc hr is a pretty high speed rating.

HR is 130mph I believe.

I have Dayton Daytona SRs in 235/60s and I love them, haven't had an issue with them since I got them :)

Tanya, can you give us an overall review on these tires? sidewall flex? dry and wet traction? I won't be driving my car in the winter.

Thanks,
Steve

HR and TR are the speed ratings for the tires. HR is up to 130mph, and TR is for up to 118mph. So if you aren't that into performance speed wise and such they aren't bad. I just had a set of the yokohama s/t tires on my car and they lasted quite a while, I was actually pretty impressed. The traction wet and dry was pretty good too. I just got a set of the falkens on my car (four days ago), but so far in comparison the side walls on the yoko's feel looser, but not too bad, and the falkens ride a bit smoother and quiter (this is also new tire vs. old tire comparison since i got the yoko's more then 2 yrs ago so my opinion may be a bit off.) All in all, the yoko s/t's worked out great for me for my daily driver, I even made a few 125+mph runs with the tires and they rode smooth (even though i'm sure that is frowned upon with a TR tire... oh well)... hope this helps...

I agree, my 84 had those tires on it when I got it, they suck ass, squeal like nothing, now those rims are sold, so the tires will be some burn bait when I get the 85 going :P

ive been on bfg radial t/a's (245/60-14) for about three days now and love them. the old kelly chargers pale in comparison. good traction, but it hasnt rained yet, but ill be ready for a lot of hydroplaning

There are some places that will refuse to install any TR rating tires (yokohoma AVID S/T) one of the mk2's we have here at home, they said it was because the car is rated for H-better rated tires.

they said something about them being liable or some shit like that

Near as I can tell Zank - no more H rateds left in 225/60/14. All S or T rated stuff left, which means we can't sustain driving over 108 mph I guess. Michelin Pilots were the last ones. Looks like I'll have to get aftermarket wheels down the road.

Michael B down under to pass 'inspection' by an engineer also had to make the original tire rating or better. Forget which rating was so important; maybe he'll chime in.
