williamb82

yeah, the wax protects the aluminum. keeps the air from touching it so that it doesnt oxidize. like i said, the finer the sand paper you use before polishing, the shinier itll be.

Did the power steering pump, etc. polish as easy as the regular aluminum pieces?

williamb82
10-03-2005, 10:14 PM
loks like it. its an anodized peice iirc, so when you sand it the anodizing will come off. this will work the same on the stock wheels too. how do you think i got the lips on my enkie's so shiney? i posted a writeup i did similar to this a few years ago on the old yahoo list.

well, depends what your sanding, like wheels, hand sanding works best, but if its somthing really rough like that 3000 pipe, the using a dremel might work faster.

Haha it always looks easy in the photos. Several hours later your still not done and have blisters on your hands from the sanding. Looks good though :D

i like taking my stuff out to be polished... all the bling, none of the buffing compound spatters and sore fingers.

williamb82
10-04-2005, 01:23 AM
well, polishing my wheels wasnt that bad. only had one wheel that caused me to have blisters. and thats cause it had some kind of chemical sprayed on it before i got it that pitted it badly. i had to sand it all out. its not hard snading, just takes plenty of time, then you get impatient and push harder and thats when you get the blisters. lol. btdt.

That's a pretty cool guide. I didn't realize it was that easy to remove the casting. I just started on my 1J piping.

Why Not? 3M flap wheels can make the job a lot easier. :) Those parts look awesome!! :ss_bling:

That guy obviously has a lot of patience, seeing as how the rubber grommets didn't suffer any damage. :)

nah, when its all polished, its harder to keep that way. i plan to paint lots of stuff. the intake manifold, turbo compressor housing, lower timing cover, i/c, etc.. will be poished. everything else will be black, the duplicolor red red anodized look paint, or gunmetal. i want an even amount of everythign so it doesnt look overdone in any 1 color.

first off this isnt my writeup. if you read it, the very first sentance says that and who wrote it. ive done a similar writeup but didnt have pics. anyhow, his final compund was whit rouge. and then he used the wax to seal it. the info is right there. all you have to do is read it. why does no one actually READ the writeup. the written words are there. everyone seems to go oooooooooohhhh pretty pictures, and then ignore everything else, and then reply asking questions that are already answered, or pm me and ask me the what was used when the info is right there on the writeup. its agervating. "end rant"

lol I read it and I have nothing to polish yet. :(
I'm kind of divided on what I'll do with my own stuff. I want to shine it up myself, just because it'll be my project car, and yet I'm not sure I want to do all that work so I might get it done.
Thanks for copying the writeup, will!

Nice write-up William!!! Come do mine now!! haha....oh...I know it wasn't your write-up but I thought you'd like to hear it once more!! ;)

If I only had the patience to do all those parts he did!! I wonder how long it would be before the shine is to the point where you'd want (well never WANT to do all that again) to re-polish!??

You can buy the large tubes of Tripoli (brown) and Rouge (white) from the Eastwood Company. The 3M flap wheel and sandpaper assortment should be available at any good hardware store.

it immediatley starts to get dull...in a few weeks it will be noticably different. some parts are just way too time consuming and intricate to polish regularly and even polishing regularly with a hand polish, you'll probably never get it back to the condition you had it after the initial polish. Wheels can be an exception. with a good coat of wax they can be protected and are not hard to acess. Engine parts on the other hand...i'd rather never touch again except for a wash. I prefer to use a high quality clearcoat after the initial polish and good cleaning....never have to polish it again.
