ok heres the deal. i like the purist frame of mind and respect it to, however it doesnt work for me. also the rice bullshit doesnt work for me either. i am almost done converting my redpra into the small block car and then its on to body work. i would like to do something different with my blackpra. granted two v8 mk2s would be great but how could i decide what todrive each day? i have seen the pictures of the rallypras but zero info. i think i would like to build one. maybe run the m series motor but then again the 4.3 aluminum chevy block would be powerful and lighter. just lookin for any rally info from the early toyota days. i want a functional rally car not a lookalike. scca has class' to run these cars. please help me out cause my search is driving me nuts. thanks guys

if I understand the SCCA rules, any engine swap immediately puts you in one of the 'modified' classes and the MKII will has it's ass handed to it the first race.

If you're gonna build for SCCA, get the rule book and build the car around it, it'll save you a LOT of headaches later on.

I think the classes the MKII are eligable for are G-Stock(GS), D Street Prepared(DSP), and then Street Modified (SM) I think.

u might want to look into the rules for scca, and see how they want the car setup. (they have certain specifications) You can go mild to wild, but a wild setup is gonna cost alotta money. Not sure if they allow engine swaps etc but a 1uz aluminum v8 toyota sounds promising (I have a block sitting in my yard). I would focus more on suspension first, and get that setup the right way. Our cars are decent to start with, but im sure there are some suspension mods that are worthy of handling in the dirt. You might want the car to form a more neutral feel rather than oversteering or understeering, however it is very close to impossible to get that. You would ideally want all 4 wheels to slip rather than the rear end sliding around.

The big rally races that everyone watches on tv are the 4wd and AWD platforms, like the subaru wrx, mitsu - evolution, and the citroen. Awesome to watch, and those guys are crazy, doing 100 mph POWER SLIDE around a turn, a mountain on one side and a 500 foot cliff on the other.

Please ... don't use the "D" word with rally.... :nono:


One on the first mods to do to a rally car is to severely beef up the suspension. I'd be welding reinforcement plates on the rear A-arms for sure. I've managed to break one on an 85 Celica due to a ... gravitational speed vector issue. (Ever seen The Dukes of Hazzard...)

Normally some extra 2" of height is required for real tough off road stuff, but due to the rear camber issues this would cause, your going to need some stiff ass stock height bad boys springs and an adjustable AGX's would do nicely all around. Due to the weight of the front of the MKII, I'd still raise the front suspension a bit. Your going to need every inch of travel you can get. (Mind you it won't carve the pavement as well, but you won't survive the rough stuff if you don't.

I don't know how seriouse you intend to get but, gaurd all you fuel/brake lines. Maybe a oil pan plate off the X-member would be a good idea too.

One more thing, change/replace the rubber strut mounts on top of the struts. If they are weak, the first time the front end of the car gets light ... POP! And when they go pop, all kinds of expensive little parts get wrecked.

Rally is all about geting your car to the finish line ... then worry about going faster.

A rally car would be cool but be prepared to break lots of parts soing it. and htey have all sorts of classes from the bone stock civic someone paid $500 all the way up to the big dogs in the modified awd classes like the wrx, evo, and focus.

and yes its power sliding in rally racing not drifting :D

but its fun either way.

oh yea and any engine swap just bumps you up to the modified class, in this case the rwd class.

AutoX yes. Off road rally racing, I'm not familiar w/ the different classes & rules.

In one of the Sports cars magazines from several years back, there was a team that was sponsered by Ruby's Restaurants I believe?? It was a pair of MKIV's, one was a TT, driven by Ralph Kosmides (sp) the other was a NA driven by Joe (forgot his last name already & he was a local PacNW guy too). Can't remember what classes they were competing in, it's been several years since I've seen the article.

MKII Supra's have been rallied in the past, I just have not seen many pictures of them. In some of the TRD articles from back in the day, I've seen several MKII Celica coupes (78 - 81's), and several MKIII Celica coupes (82 - 85's).

As others have already mentioned.... Find the SCCA rulebook & start reading. Like in AutoX, in Rally racing, I also believe you have to build your car around a rulebook.

Deffinately, get the rule book for the type of racing you want to do since there will be some differences.

I'm sure Joe B (Solo1Supra) could give better pointers/help on this subject since I'm really only familiar with SoloII (AutoX).

thanks guys i do have the scca vehicle rules and the only class that states engine is free is rwd open class, well all open class' but obviously i will be in rwd. thanks for the input and the more input from you guys the better. not gonna get serious like travel the world or anything but i would like to compete locally and some across the us
