I have used search, and i was wondering what treads do you use if you are running in the snow?

I know some of you up in canada run yours in the winter some time, what did you use in yours?

I might need to do that this winter, so what do you recommend?

I hope this is the last year I run my supra in the winter.
But I have used 2 types of tires on the supra, Blizzak and Nokian Hakkapelita Q.

The Nokian's kick ass hands down. I have great traction with the Hakkapelitas compared to any other winter tire I've run. (I've tried, Michelin Alpine, Blizzak, BFG Slalom, Road handlers (great also), and another I cannot think of).

It is still winter, and will kick her ass end out with too much throttle, but drives great in highway and around town.

Nokian WR's is what I run in Denver.

They are made in Finland...

Goo

I ran 195/70/14's on 5.5 inch Celica rims. Narrower is better for the snow.

Exactly ... 195/70/14's on L type Supra rims (leave off the center caps and they don't look too bad ... or some Camery steelies work too.

I've got a set of both. As far as brand ... if you go to a narrower rim ... any snow tire is good enough to keep it between the ditches. If you need a super expensive narrow snow tire to control your car in snow ... don't drive the Supra.

Yo ain't gotz Da Skilzzs Po Hiver shivver.

Even the cheapest crappiest skinny snow tires are better than the best wide snow tire ...

Oh, and 14 Ltype rims are a dim a dozen ... NOBODY wants them.

Good God! Those tires have more lines and wrinkels than an old folks home... :facesjump

Not saying they don't work ... but what do a set of those creators cost???

That must have an intersting fit? (runs off to find tire/rim website to check ...)

**EDIT** http://www.bigcustomwheels.com/info_specs.jsp

It won't let me put a 195/70/14 on a rim over 7" wide ... Hmmmm me thinks that's a bad thing. How streached were the sidewalls? (Eh, I'm sure it wasn't that bad...)

Dunlop Qualifier M+S studded snow tires on a beater set of P-Type wheels. Bought these in late 91. IN the stock 225/60/14 size. And already this size was hard to find. The place where I got them from, I had to option of studded or unstudded ($20 difference). Have only driven them in 2 snow seasons since then, the rest of the time it's been a mostly rainy winter, or the snow melts after 1 day & I don't bother changing the tires.

They do grip very well however... As long as there is snow on the ground. Dry pavement... Pretty typical responses (crappy traction & crappier gas mileage).

LOL Chris.....Giacchi has a set of the old dunlop snows on beater wheels that he keeps for notoriety.

Sometimes he takes em in the bath tub w/him (as sort of a rubber duckie substitute) :facesjump

You don't still use those suckers do you???

The Nokian WR is about the same price as Blizzaks, but a better value because they last twice as long.

So FOOK all season tires, as most of them just suck in the snow.

I just carted a set of L types from State College, PA.
Now there's three sets just taking up space here in CO.
A fourth set is about to be hauled off with the L carcass.
I could strip the trashed tires and ship them for the cost of shipping and a pizza :)

Well I'll be getting Nokians again this year, the last set lasted 3 winters.
When I get them mounted up again, I can get a pic of how stretched, they're not that bad really.

LOL!!!

I have not put them on the car in at least 6 years... Too many mild winters as of late & the snow does not stay around. Thus the snows have been sitting in the storage closet. Next to the snowboards... At least they are not outside.

This year may get interesting... Looks like it may be a cold one!!!

Heh... I should drag these out of the closet & take a picture of these... Just for shits....

I used to live in alaska for 6 winters and I always just ran a good set or all season radials and never had issues. of course purpose design snow tires will work better. If I lived someplace where I needed to drive in hte snow again I would do the 195/70 recomendation on a cheap set of second rims and keep my others for some sticky summer/wet rubber.

Just remember to go slower and give yourself plenty of extra stopping distance and you should be fine.

and remember the idiots around you cant drive (especially if they are on this forum JK)
