A member of the Toronto Supra Club pointed me in this direction. It's just too cool. If I only had that shop or one like it, the creations I could make.

Is anyone a member there? Recommend Milliken's books on car setups. amazon, ebay and books4cars.com. That thing has great potentials, excellence and horror. There is no short way to redesign or design a suspension. I say this as encouragement. Hedoes claim to be fab guy not a design guy.

Yeah, I am. *recommends*

Got the recommendation ...
What is it your getting at??
Ive built many suspensions, but this one in particular is not redesigned at all.
It utilizes stock MK3 suspension, So im not sure what you are saying here..
Looking forward to your response

I have a great respect for the degree of abilities both the designer and the builder must possess. I got my experience as a frame and auto body mechanic, both passenger car and truck. I don't presume you don't know what you're doing I'm sure you aren't questioning whether I do or not.
If you explain what you're doing I'll understand. If you don't want to explain what you're doing I'll understand that too.
Not sure what you want me to explain, but I'll be happy to answer any questions

Okay, with the track, caster and wheel travel being different on both cars how is the wider track and existing fenderwells accomodated? With suspension pick-up points optimized for one track, how is track or componentry scaled to work as originally designed if narrowing the track isn't redesigning?
I would hope the insight shown by the questions themselves show I am earnest. I am seriously considering a next worthy project that will require a blank sheet approach. I'd gladly use an existing double-wishbone but the engineering leaves me the option of lightweight, tubular a-arms for less effort, weight and greater adjustablility.
I'm not changing the track width at all.
I am building the celica around the supra stuff. the body will be completly reworked. rear fenders cut off and built new from scratch. the front end will be a one peice flip up front clip. the car will be alot wider in the end.

But doesn't having a shorter wheelbase alter Ackerman angles? How is the change in Ackerman angle of the steering arms achieved?
Yes you are right.
But Ackerman, will only really come in to play at low speed tight turns. like in a parking lot, so not to scuff the tires(most of the time the car will be drifting sideways anyway:D). At high speed I think the difference will be minimal if at all. If it turns out to be worse than expected, I will cut off the mount for the steering rack and move it longitudially on the car to dial it in.
I've been rolling it around here, and it rolls beautifully. No scuffing that i can tell.
Fingers crossed :D
Finally got a little step in a forward direction.. and damn it feels good!!!
Got some rims and tires finally and started to widen the little beast..

Yes a 200hp 8000 rpm redline NA 4 cyl
only becuase I have it and this is a budget build.. It's really just about the Metal shaping for me...
Though I am thinking about doing Turbo and fuel injection after it's driving...
Glass plan:
I am using stock glass.. except I am eliminating the trim and rubber seal.. the edge of the body will be reworked a little bit to bring the finished painted edge to a 3/16" gap to the glass.. and then the glass edge is polished, the first inch of glass will get black matrix paint on the inside so you can't see the glue, and then the glass is urethaned in.. the glass is then flush and smooth with the body.. just like how new cars are done... the one that comes to mind off hand is the back quarter glass on the new mustangs.. if you start looking at new cars you'll see what I mean..
The roof is cut 1/2" down and moved a 1/4" back in the back to give the right distance from top to bottom for the glass... and the front it dropped 1 1/2" roughly in the front and it went back with the arc and the fact that it was moved back as well.. this gives me the lay back and the proper gaps top and bottom for the front glass.. the arc of the glass and the stock opening don't quite stay paralell in the front though, so it will be made to fit with sheet metal. and the sides filled in.. in addition I have to build up a ledge for the glass to get glued to, at the proper height to make it flush.
The back quarter glass will work it just won't have to wind all the way up in order to meet the rubber.. the door glass will have to be ground down to fit... VERY carefully mind you, as it is tempered... I found the best way it with a flap wheel grinding disk on a grinder.. takes a long time but it works without shattering it..

wow :O
Well, I went back a few steps and then ahead again..
I decided to lower the body on the chassis another 3", cut the rear quarters off reshaped them and shortened the back end. and then cut what I had for the firewall apart, moved it all back and smoothed it out..

The amount and quality of work you do is amazing. It is a very new approach to modding a car. And I like the looks except for one thing........it is a coupe ;) But I guess it would be much harder to chop a hatchback.
maybe I missed it from glancing through the thread here and at the other forum, but other than the engine is "just a 4-banger", what engine is it specifically? 200hp, 8000rpm, and because of the color of the valve covers I'm thinking a silver top 4AGE, but as I'm never seen a silver top, I have no idea if that's what you're talking about. But my brother's 20V blacktop 4AGE puts out similar numbers (a little higher redline though).
But very good work. It would be so much fun to just chop up a car and make your own frame for it. Oh the fun I could have with residual income.
I didn't think it was a 4AGE, but had to ask. An 18rg, eh? That still doesn't get you in the 200hp range. What kinda stuff did you do to the engine to get that extra 50hp (not an easy task)?

With ITB's and a cutsom exhaust manifold, I would not be suprised that he is hitting 200. The 18rg is a very peppy engine and responds very well to mods.
It's bored over, ported and polished, bigger valves, 40mm dellortos, header, electronic ignition.. I was told it should hit 200hp, but who knows without a dyno test
well, I hope it does well for you. My friend has a minty early 70s celica. I think its a 72, not sure though. He's just keeping it in storage for now because the motor doesn't run and he was going to swap a different engine into if, I think a 22re.
Thanks!
I only really chose this motor becuase it was in it when I bought the car..
(Almost 10 years ago now)
This is a tight budget labour only build.
To date I only have about $2200 invested (in parts) into it including the brand new 19" wheels and tires.
If (or When) I ever have surplus ca$h to put in this thing, it'll get the all aluminum DOHC I-Force V8. Almost 500hp and 500ft/lbs of torque???!!!?? what?>!{@O$#%(!
Then, if I have that kind of cake, it'll get reworked to see what kind of numbers it can really pull!!!
But for now it's all about the metal fab ;)
I'm just a simple metal shaper trying to build some cool sh#t.
My idea with this car is to build it as if Toyota did for the celica, what GM did for the Camaro, or what Chrysler just did for the Challenger.
God damn that new Challenger is hot eh?
Any Celica enthusists want to buy it and pay me to finish it?:hahano:
That would be my dream..
Then I could concentrate on building this thing fulltime, and move on to the next project.

Ive owned quite a few 1st gen Celicas and still have a soft spot for them in my heart. I think what you are doing is insanely cool. I would really like to see a more modern powerplant in there though. A well built 3SGTE is capable of double that HP, and with the right budget can top 600hp (I know of one that is pushing 700+). Also there is far more aftermarket available for a 3S than and RG.
Ive always wanted a 71 "flatlight" with a full independent suspension and a 3S. If you could retrofit that to flatlight tails and the under body tank...Maybe by the time you are done with it I can afford to buy it. Thats actually not a pipe dream, I would seriously buy that car as its been a lifelong dream. I personally think the early coupes (not a huge hatch fan) are timeless bodies and can look just as modern today as they did 35 years ago with the right treatment.

Those wheels are giant, looks like a monster truck, but amazing work.
Awesome, I've never liked the hatch cars either, the coupes hit a note with me..
If you are serious about wanting something like that, I would be blessed to create it for you...
But, as this kind of car building goes, it's built from the eye of the beholder, also I should say, from the wallet of the beholder :P lol
So I must say, if you have a vision of what a car should be, you would need to be in the seat next to the creater guiding it..
Custom cars are quite a thing, when they are built they only really fit one person.
And when they're built for "you", Dayum!!!
I built a car for a guy at my previous employer, I had over 3200 hrs of fab time alone into it.
It was awesome every once and a while I would call him in and get a fit up.. It's like a tailor made suit..
nothing like it

That guy (Kyle) is down in K-falls. He has a 1UZ to go into it as well. He's making slow progress though as he is a student. Very ambitious project indeed.
