Its time to get cracking on this calendar idea. These will be the rules:
1. I will do my best to NOT have duplicates from last year. Of course, this is assuming I have enough good quality pics/cars.
2. I want only calendar worthy cars. I will do the deed of being calendar nazi. Why? I want this to be as professional as possible, and typically such calendars show the best of the best. I will be responsible for choosing which cars go in the calendar, but you can rest assured they will be the finest examples in our community. My car will NOT be in the calendar, this way no one can pretend Im playing favorites.
3. I do not want chicks, or anything cheesy like that. I want super clean thought out pictures. Cool backgrounds, action etc. just follow the basic rules of photography. For tips, look here: http://www.cobracountry.com/fototips/home.html
BAD PIC:
http://www.cobracountry.com/fototips/cobra-before.jpg
GOOD PIC:
http://www.cobracountry.com/fototips/cobra-after.jpg
Here is an excellent 'creative' pic:
http://www.vf-engineering.com/jay/moving.jpg
4. Car can be stock, modded, whatever.
5. I am thinking just 1 quality shot per page. I am not into having inset images of engine/interior etc..when they are typically too small to appreciate any detail that may be there.
6. High quality (3++ megapixel) digital images / slides / 8"x10" prints are accepted formats. More to follow here.
7. I was going to seek a local shop to do these, or if all else fails go to Kinkos like Dupler did last year. His calendar looked great. Does anyone on here have any experience making nice calendars? I remember someone offering assistance, but I forgot who it was :( I want the price to be $20-24 to the members. This can be taken offline via PM.
8. This is a forum, so please reply with input. I encourage all input!!
Get your photographer caps ready, and go scout the perfect backdrop.....its time to put this bad boy together :)

WOO HOO!!!!
Another MKII calendar is in the works!!!! The calendar that Phil Dupler did last year came out well, for what was done with it. Can't wait for the next one. Although, I'm still slightly bummed that my car did not make it last year.
In my case, are multi generation pictures acceptable??? In this case, it would be the 85 Redpra & the 81 Silver Slug?? Will see if I can find a way to be creative about this.
Sweet...the first one may be worthy, I definitely want a calendar regardless of who gets their car on it.

Oh well, maybe I'll have a nice car by next years calendar...

Mike, what is the deadline for pictures to be submitted?
SupraFiend
07-24-2003, 11:43 AM
Ditto on the deadline question. Also when you say no repeats do you mean the same car from the previous year is not eligilble or the same pic? What if the car has changed a fair bit?
For digital image submissions, I highly recomend you accept nothing short of a 3+ megapixel image (2048x1500 something). My pic that was in last years was printed from a 1600x1200 image and it wasen't enough, it looked blurry when it was blown up while the original image was crystal clear.
Ummm, I think that may have been me that offered help a while ago, I work at a print shop in the electronic prepress department. However on Aug 4, I am leaving for Norway and will be gone for 3 weeks...
We print everything here at 350dpi, 300 is standard for us, at the most and I'm not too familiar with megapixels, but I do know that some cameras just plain don't take pictures higher than 72dpi. They look great on screen, but fuzzy printed out, especially if blown up. 100%size = 72dpi, 200%size = 36dpi,really rough, etc. So you really need to know eventual output size (in inches, so you wind up with 300 Dots Per Inch when printed on a press) when you take the picture so if it is to be enlarged, there is enough resolution to support it.
So if you take a 4x5" picture at 300dpi and blow it up 200% to 8x10, the dpi goes down by half to 150 and will still look great on the monitor which displays everything at 72dpi but start to look fuzzy when printed. I you blow it up more the resolution gets worse and worse.
I hope I managed to explain this in a way that makes sense. It's one of my goals to inform the entire world why 72 dpi (like web images) will look like crap when enlarged. I'll step down now.
I also do all the scanning here and can output film, but it sounds like it may get printed on a DocuColor or something not like a traditional press. (Still need 300dpi!)
What quantity are you thinking of having done? I can talk to a salesperson here and see if it's feesible to keep it in the price range, but we normally do high quantity runs, but we have other locations...
I'm happy to help with what I can, but will be without continuous internet connection for most of August. How I will survive I don't know.
Oh yeah, I'll be on an island on the southern coast of Norway eating raspberries and enjoying the boats going by on those loooong summer days.:D
LMK, I have a week or so left before vacation, and I'll be back the 21st, and will definitely check the forum if AT ALL POSSIBLE from over there.

P.S. My Supra is NOT worthy of the calendar, but I have some pics from when it was new in 84!

Just a little hint, last years submissions included a buttload of red Supras including four or five Super Deep Red 85s, and and two Super Red 83s. For those with red mk2s, you'll need to use a lot of imagination to come up with a shot that'll compete for spot in the calendar. There were also more than enough white mk2s submissions. Not nearly enough black mk2s, in fact, only half a black mk2 last year. I really wanted to have a range of colors in the calendar but I had to work with what I got which was really pretty impressive given it was done absolute last minute. Thankfully Mike is getting this started with enough lead time that everyone can do some experimentation with the camera. Don't experiment too long tho. One of our members from England submitted some beautiful pics but unfortunately, he got his calendar before I got his pics so if sending from outside the U.S., get them sent early.
I will reiterate that the quality of the original print is of utmost importance. I did have to throw out a couple of pics last year because they were too poor quality to reproduce. It was a shame too because they were nice cars, rarer colors and would have given the calendar more diversity.

Also, what about a cover? I did not do a cover last year partly because I only had individuals cars and didn't want to play favorites more than I already was by picking 12 and partly because I didn't have time to mess with graphics for the cover. I think it would be great if somebody could get a really great group shot of several mk2s, perhaps from a mini-meet for the cover. Some cool graphics would be nice too.

Hey Malloy...
Some info of the picture... The picture is taken from an Annual event that happens in Australian Motorsport called the Targa Tasmainia. It is a race over a week or so on an Island. This Picture was taken in 2000 and I believe the car was written off in 2001. happened during the high speed of the course and it skidded off the side of the road in excess of 200Kph into the ditch. I can't remember the details because it was broad cast over TV awhile ago.
I just e-mailed the group and is waiting for a responce.
Cheers.
More info about the race is on http://www.targa.org.au

I don't think I'll have my new paint job soon enough to submit a picture, infact I prolly won't be able to get it painted till next summer (sigh, poor paintless supra, so much work, so little money  ). Well, to any one with a mint MkII in the Eugene/Oregon area I have a 5 mega pixel digital camera. Also I'm pretty good at taking spiffy pictures. So if any one wants me to take some cool shots of their car, I would be happy to do so!

Hi all, I'm still working on getting a good pic. None of the pics I took a few weeks ago turn out to my satisfaction. It's really hard to get an ideal pic without any blemish/mistakes. There are a couple that turned out great but there's reflection on my 7mgte mk2 of poles/signs/trees and also unexpected light poles on background, etc. grrr. Will have to pick different spots. Not easy to do with a regular 35mm camera as you can't check out each pic instantly like you can on digital.
Anyhow, once I get decent pics, should I scan the pics to put on this forum like I did under "Braid wheels" for all to see or should it be a "surprise" if it makes it to the calender? :P

Unless Mike sets up an FTP site for pic submission, you will not be able to send him pics that are high enough resolution for the calendar, his ISP will block emails that large.....I just tried sending Mike pics last night, and they didn't go through.
If you don't want to get photos made, you could burn the pics to a CD and mail it to him.

Just an idea, but if your pics are under 10 megabytes, why not set up a free pic-hosting site? I use Pbase(actually paid for a membership after a few months). This way you can put all of your pictures up for Mike in a smaller size, give him the website address, and he can view them and tell you which one he'd like a full-res file of, then delete the rest and post that one image in full resolution!
There are a ton of services like this out there, Pbase seems to be one of the easier and higher quality than others...

Hi Dan,
Im going to pick them. You can call me the calendar Nazi. Typically, it will be a 1st come 1st serve deal, assuming the pics show and will print well. This is no different than how any other car club typically prints calendars.

yeah I like how Phil D kept it all a suprise untill the calender actually arrived in your hands. Its like seeing the same trailer for a movie 30 times for a year before it comes out. When you finally see the movie, your like, ho hum, I saw that stunt coming a mile away because I've seen it dozens of times in the last year in trailers.
Mike, got the pics back last night. Theres some really good ones in there but I didn't have the light settings quite right on the camera so the reds and greens aren't as deep as they should be. I can request them to adjust that when they print the 8x10s but last time I did that they didn't asjust as much as I was hoping. I think I may try some crazy high res scans and then adjust them myself to get it perfect. Plus I can crop them right and fix the odd imperfection then. If its like a 5000 by 5000 pixel image that should be pretty good to print out at 8x10. If the scan isn't high enough quality I'll get the 8x10s printed and adjusted. How do you want me to get the digital images to you Mike?

Quick thought. Any one here at celicasupra.com own a two tone red and black 84 (I think, can’t remember year). Also happen to live in Eugene OR and live a short distance from the U of O?
I ask because there is this really nice supra, one of the most finished and new looking ones I have ever seen in Eugene. Either this car spent the last +19 years protected and never driven, or some one spent a lot of time fixing her up. A superb example of “MkIIness” that should really be in the calendar.
If this person isn’t already a member I will have to tell him/her to check this page out and submit a photo. Guess that wasn’t such a “quick” thought…..

That has to be about the nicest looking l-type I have ever seen. Very cool! Is that your neighborhood?
What are those things hanging down between the wheels?
82TURBOSUPRA
08-28-2003, 06:44 PM
The skirts between the wheels is made from a nylon reinforced belt material that is 1/4" thick that will flex on speed bumps but will stay rigid at high speed, very stable at 140 mph and keeps road debris from hitting lower panels. Not my neighborhood, mine is covered by to many trees for any nice pictures.

Mike, have you got a deadline yet for the cut off point. I am still waiting for my iforged rims to arrive. Seems like this happened last year. I have taken some more pictures today and i can put them on a disc if you want.
I would prefere if I could have my new wheels on and my body kit finished. I am going to get on to my bodywork man again tomorrow to see if I can get my car in. I have been waiting for about three months.

Wish my car wasn't so ratty looking. I think this is sort of a cool shot:
http://binrock.net/cowgod/photos/2003/20030413-drift-day/scan0007.jpg
And it's from a 35mm SLR so it's got all the resolution necessary too. But the trim hanging off the sides of the car (and the severe body roll haha) sort of kill it.

Yeah, my car needs a little work here and there...when I'm happy with it I'll take some pic's...but by the time I get around to fixing everything, it probably wont be ready until next year. So if you make a 2005 calendar, I'll send them in for that. :D
Good luck with the 2004 Calendar anyway...should be good!

Please get all pics to me by Oct. 20.
Hi guys,
Flyin Hawaiian has an opportunity for us to get top notch calendars, but they will be almost $30 shipped. I will have to pre-sell 75 of these to make it happen though. I will barely break even at that price, so this will not serve as a fund raiser or anything for the site. Chris is pulling some strings to let us run off a small batch of 85 calendars (he is purchasing 10! for himself)
Please get all pics to me by Oct. 20. I have received pics from only 2 people so far.
If this option proves to be too expensive, I will go for the lower cost option that we saw last year. Still a nice calendar, and a bit cheaper.
Personally, I would flip for the $30 calendar ;) What do you guys think, $30 too much?

Pat, I think your problem is that the Yahoo site is not really suitable for this type of linking. I'm assuming that you're getting the tags right - should look something like http://www.yellowsun.plus.com/start+point+4.jpg (without the spaces)
Most ISPs (you're with freeserve?) provide some free webspace and you don't have to learn HTML just to be able to store some photos on it, you just need to be able to use FTP (which is just a file manager that works across a network).
To post your picture above I downloaded it from your Yahoo album, FTP'd it to the free webspace allocated to me by my ISP, then linked to it as above.
Nil desperandum, it's all character building :rotfl:

Seamus,
Except for 1 of mine, there might be problems w/ the rest of the ones that I sent in. I sent in 6 pictures, and originally I had them all done in the requested size of 8x10"s. On 5 of them, the ends got cropped off (not too cool looking, when the front & rear bumpers have been whacked off) when I got them back from the developers, so in order to keep them from getting cropped off, I had to redo those 5 in 8x12" size instead... Thus the "size" problem... The ends of the pictures have been retained (thus the bumpers are not cropped off), but the pictures are now in the wrong size....
So I'll have to see if any of my pictures makes it in...

Yeah, I love those shots too ... even though I got very tired of the snow.
Those shots made me look at red cars differently: bright red paint is actually a safety feature! It may actually prevent your car from getting bulldozed when it is mostly submerged in a snowy parking lot! :mk2vroom: (But YMMV.)

We are going to take payments for the calendars starting 12/1/2003. Price: $32.00 shipped (via check or money order). $33.75 (via Paypal) Please order ASAP, this will ensure prompt shipment. :)
Why so much $$? I will be working with Chris (Flyin' Hawaiian) on a high quality calendar that rivals the nicest production calendars you may see in book stores. Since we are printing a small number of calendars, the prices are elevated somewhat.
Why this is special: Chris was able to swing a deal with his local printer, to do a run of only 100 calendars...where most printers would laugh at such a request and demand 500 or more. We have the rare opportunity to have a small yet high quality run on these calendars. We must all thank Chris for putting this together at such short notice.
I need to presell 50% in the next week or so to ensure I will not go broke financing this project. I will then front the remainder if need be. Hopefully these puppies will sell right out ;) We will not make 1 penny on these calendars, it will be a challenge to break even @$32 shipped. I think its worth it, since we will have an awesome calendar to hang in our homes, offices, garages (wish I had one of those) etc :)
Payment Options:
1. $32.00 ( via check or money order)
