View Full Version : LJM Front Strut bar group buy

I'm setting up a poll at the request of several, to verify the interest in another group buy.
If you are new and don't know what the bars look like, PM me or send me an email and I will send you pictures.
Bars are fabricated by an independent race car fabricator and are are made of 3/4" steel tubing welded to 1/4" steel plate for mounting across all 3 strut mounts. Bars are adjustable Horz. and Vert. through the inclusion of a Hyme joint on the Driver's side. Bars are available in a wide range of color choices as long as you pick powder coated black. (black really is the only color available)
This bar will fit any MKII Supra with a 5mge, 5mgte, 6mge, 6mgte, 7mge or 7mgte. QUALIFIER: depending upon the 5 or 6 mgte set up I suppose there could be issues but I am not aware of anyone having any issues. Mine actually clears my 7mgte better than it does the 5mge. Bars will fit with a Rabid Chimp intake pipe (AG graciously modified his design to make them fit together )
We must have a minimum of 10 prepaid orders in order to start fabrication so for the sake of others, please don't respond positively to the poll unless you are ready to send payment in the near future. Sorry guys but it isn't fair to make others wait 6 months while payments come in.
Bars are $160.00 USD shipped to your door in the USA. Shipping outside the USA is extra. Shipping runs about 25.00 to Canada slightly more the further away you are. Shipping outside the USA, the best idea is to try to find others who want a bar and have them shipped in 1 box to a single address, this will significantly cut individual shipping costs. In the past, some of our Canadian friends had them shipped to someone in the USA and had them driven across the border. Again, greatly cuts down on shipping costs.
Payment can be made via Paypal, personal check or money order. Sorry, not set up to accept credit cards.
I appologize for this post being so long but I'm trying to answer everyone's questions before you ask them.

You did a good job explaining away some questions. Sorry I still have one.
Modified when?
I purchased an intake about a year ago. Would that be a before/after modified pipe to fit the LJM bar?
MkIISuperSupra
03-25-2003, 01:17 AM
Aaron wil probably have to give the absolute definitive answer here but I believe He modified his intake pipe before any were sold. I do know He modified the bar in Oct. or Nov. of 2001 so if you bought it after that there should be no problem.

Wallcrawlr,
In the fall of 2001, I brought the prototype AG intake pipe w/ me to the Vegas meet, so that I could test out the pipe on the dyno (to see how well the pipe worked @ 2,200 ft above sea level vs right at sea level during the initial testing), and to see how well the LMJ bar would fit in conjunction w/ the AG pipe. Yes, there were some fitment issues, where the bar was rubbing on the 2 vacuum hoses that come out of the 2 vacuum nipples on the intake pipe (and I took pictures of this problem, during the test fit while we were in the Luxor Garage).
If I remember this correctly, Aaron Garney only made possibly 1 - 3 intake pipes after the prototype pipe, then after that, he stopped production briefly, so that the vacuum hose nipples could be relocated, so that the hoses would clear the LJM bar. Intake production resumed around the end of October - beginning of November of 2001 & the vacuum hoses no longer have any rubbing issues w/ the LJM bar.
If you ordered yours in early 2002, then you have the redesigned intake pipe that will easily clear the LJM bar.
So yes, once again, I was the test vehicle for both of these lovely items. Heck, who's to turn down FREE DYNO TIME for testing out the intake pipe???? :D  8) Certainly not I......

...
First things first. First, I have to meet with someone tomorrow to find out if we can even get the fabricator to make up another batch and what His timing would be. Very long story. Let's just say that a lot of it depends on his work load....
Then we can worry about timing. The cut off date isn't nearly as important to me as it is to the buyers.....so you all decide. I already have bars on both of my cars :BIG: and no amount of money is going to get either of them off my cars.....
But seriously, it just depends on you all and how quickly you want to get them on your cars.
I'll post tomorrow after my meeting if it looks like a GO in the near future.

Leslie,
Do you have any idea on perhaps a ballpark figure to get one of these to Australia? No need to be in AUD. Although I'm sure I could get something over here, I don't know of anywhere that would be able to custom make me one to fit the 7m conversion.

If you let me know what your postal code is I can check. I'll also talk to the traffic manager at work and see if He has any ideas about the cheapest rates. Of course a round trip ticket and I'll hand deliver it :D

Leslie
Round trip? LOL, if I could afford that I'd be using it myself to go to the Vegas meet!
Postcode is 5127. I would guess that cheapest would be surface shipping, that wouldn't paricularly bother me if the whole thing is affordable.
Cheers :D

03-27-2003, 12:45 AM
Dave,
Had to try for that ticket  I love Australia!
USPS ground would be 4-6 weeks for delivery and 28.10 USD
USPS global express 3-5 days for delivery and 57.00 USD
UPS or FED-X and we start at 128.00 USD so they are out of the question.
USPS ground is almost the same as to Canada, really not bad, just way slow.

Dave,
No, actually that is without insurance. I can easily insure it but you will then be stuck paying duties on your end and may be a bit surprised how steep they will be.....
Waiting on feedback from others on setting a close date.

Neal,
Are the bars being made right now? NO. We won't order and schedule the bars until the group buy ends and we have at least a minimum of 10 pre-paid orders. We have to purchase them with a minimum quantity of 10 bars. If we have at least 10 when the group buys ends, we will order the bars, schedule their production and get them shipped as quickly as possible.
Since no one else has made any suggestions, I would suggest that we close the group buy on April 30. That gives everyone 4 weeks to get their payments in and reserve a bar. If we have less than 10 prepaid orders at that point, we will of course return eveyones money.
As previously posted, payments can be made through paypal (please add 5.00 to cover fees) or by personal check or moneyorder.
Hope this helps. The fastest way to get bars fabricated and shipped is to get payment sent in.

Brian,
I spent $2800 on my 84. Since then I have more than doubled that on mods (including a Toysport 6M/install).
The LJM strutbar (as well as the rear shock brace) made a bigger difference in the car's behavior than anything else except the 6M. In terms of "bang for your buck" its a screamin' deal.
Considering its about the same price as a good set of strut cartridges, no suspension mods should proceed without one IMHO, as it will make everything else you do work better. And increase your handling predictability without further mods.
Body flex sucks when its time to plant the tires for the next hairpin.

And I truely do not mean to sound like a SMART ass but I honestly do not have an answer for you. I will order the bars as soon as the group buy closes on the 30th. Once I order them I will have a better idea of when they will ship for sure. Remember each bar is hand made and they are not sitting on a shelf someplace...If I were to guess, I would say somewhere between mid to end of May depending somewhat on the total number of orders.
As soon as I get an estimate, I will certainly let everyone know.
And no I don't think you sound like an ass or demanding.....Of course everyone has the same questions and want to get their bars as quickly as possible... :D

BTW, aren't there any offers for a never used black LJM 1st version bar? If anyone want to buy it now instead of waiting, let me and Leslie know. Come on guys you gotta give Leslie a fair break not having to use this bar as paper weight!
The only reason I never used it is 'cause I have custom IC piping that would interfere with this bar's heim ball joint on the passenger side (on 1st version).

Actually, the group buy closed yesterday and I ordered the bars today. However, I did end up ordering a couple extra. If you really want in I would suggest that you pay via paypal 165.00 or express mail 160.00 immediately. I have updated the running list on page three of this topic. If anyone has sent in payment, and doesn't see their name on the list, please let me know so I can accomodate. I did order a few extras so if anyone missed out, there may still be time.
The Bars are in work and should be finished sometime between the middle of May and the end of May. Right now the long pole for delivery is the powdercoaters. They are running a 10 day backlog and that may slow things down just a bit.
Thanks to everyone for a very successful group buy.

Everyone, I am on my way to Oregon in about 10 minutes so I won't be on line for awhile.
Just wanted to let everyone know, that the strut bars are in work and are getting close. If they are completed while I am gone, Jay Balducci will start shipping them out. He has everyones addresses.
Even though I won't be around, the bars will continue to progress.

Fabrication wise the strut bars have been finished for 2 weeks. They have been in Queue at the powder coaters since then. I did call and confirm that they were scheduled to be powder coated today and ready for pick up tomorrow. :bday: Hopefully they will be. Once a day is given, the powder coater is pretty reliable.
Hopefully, no matter what they will be ready to start shipping this weekend. No offense but CRAP! that means I have to get all the lists updated tonight. Shipping depends on Jay B's schedule. If necessary, I will drive over to Phoenix (500 mile drive) this weekend and help out. It may not seem like much but trust me, boxing and labeling 30 of these puppies is quite a chore.
I will check tomorrow and verify that they are finished and ready to go.
Thanks to everyone for being patient. The wait is almost over and I can assure you the hardest point is waiting for them to arrive once you know they have shipped.

I have updated the list of people who are about to have bars shipped on page 3 of this thread. This is everyone that I have received payment from as of 5-28-03. There were others who had expressed an interest but I have not received payment if anyone has sent a payment and it isn't reflected in the list please let me know.
Once these bars are shipped there will be one old style bar that I will make someone a good deal on if you have an 84-86 MKII. 82 and 83 cars have what I consider to be a rub issue with this bar (that is why we changed the design) And....there will be 1 new style bar available to the first payment received if anyone is still interested.

OK, Jay picked the bars up today and is packaging them right now.
We are going to ship this set of bars out Fed-X ground, (way faster than USPS and UPS).
We are thinking of shipping them with Signature required.
Need to know if this is too big of a PITA for eveyone.......After 3 attempts to deliver, bar gets shipped back to Jay.........You don't want that and neither do we since the cost to reship would be a bank buster. With signature service, Fed-X won't deliver unless there is someone there to sign for it, which at least eliminates the danger of someone walking off with a bar from the front door....
Need an answer tonight so if you see this and had any thoughts, please let us know.
Thanks and bars will be on their way SOON :D

Andrew in Canada - your bar was shipped by USPS this morning and you should receive it in 5-10 days (air mail).
ALL: We did not opt for the 'signature required' per most everyone's request. Fed Ex does not have that UPS sticker option that allows you to sign the sticker and they drop off the shipment - you must make an appointment - good for some things, but decided this was not advantageous for all those not at the shipping location.
Enjoy!

I think the bar is pretty intuitive to install, however, you will notice that there are several thickness washers in the parts bag. These are inserted above and below the hardware that the bolt goes through and are used to adjust the height of the bar above the intake plenum. Enjoy!

What a difference! all the little things I didn't like about the steering went away, especially it's habit of wanting to require a little bit too much pressure to get it to come off a straight line for slight corrections (had to fight a tendency to overcorrect). It also liked to wander a little if I didn't pay strict attention to straight line driving (I thought it was me). Now it is just right. One question, should the weight be taken off the tires when it is fitted, or should it be fitted on the ground as I did it? It's been raining here, so I haven't had a chance to flatten out and straighten the road over Mt. Weather, but I already love the way the strut bar makes it handle. :D :D :D GOOD JOB! Thanks.

I'm not sure which way is the best to do the install. Someone mentioned a group buy or so ago tha they had "pre-loaded" the bar by jacking the front up a little then insalling the bar. I put both of mine on with the wheels on the ground. Someone who understands the suspension system a lot better than I will have to speak up and talk about the pros and cons.
Glad you are enjoying your bar. It is amazing how it changes the handling!

Geez,
By the time everyone gets their strut bars installed, there will be more Mk2s in our group WITH them vs. those that don't. I have to admit, it's a nice addition to the car. Not only does the bar work really REALLY well, it looks cool installed too.
Car behaves much better in a corner - has a nice solid feel, and I like how tractable it is now. Toyota should have put them on the Supra OEM.

trdmkii, go here for pictures: http://www.celicasupra.com/ljmbar.htm the last page of pictures shows the order for the washers. As near as I can tell, the three silver washers of the same thickness go under the ball, the brass colored washer of the same thickness, on top. I used the thin washer on the bottom with the nylon insert locking nut, after dropping the bolt through.

Now that everyone has them installed. Here are the installation instructions that Mike and Jay wrote.
Leslie
LJM Strut Bar for the MK2 Toyota Supra
Thank you for purchasing the LJM front strut stabilizing bar. Installation is straight forward and can be done by following the steps below:
Tools Needed:
14mm socket and ratchet
15/16” socket and ratchet
15/16” box/open end wrench or 8” or 10” crescent wrench
Remove all items from box and packing materials from bar.
Thread the silver “eyelet” with lock nut (this is the “adjuster”) into the bar. Leave about 1¼ -inches of the threads visible.
NOTE: The “adjuster” will be on the DRIVER’S side of the engine compartment when completed.
Remove the 6 upper strut mounting plate nuts (3 each side) with a 14mm socket.
Install the bar onto the PASSENGER side mount studs (it will only fit one way - bar runs over engine). DO NOT thread nuts onto studs yet.
Place the opposite strut bar plate so that the eyelet of the “adjuster” slides in between the tabs of the opposite strut bar plate and then lower the plate onto DRIVER’s side mount studs.
Note the location of the hole in the tabs relative to the eye of the “adjuster.” If necessary, remove the plate and thread the “adjuster” in or out to line up the “adjuster” eyelet hole with the holes in the plate tabs so the bolt can fit through it.
NOTE: The bolt and side plates are drilled to EXACT fit, so align holes as close as possible. Do not expect to be able to put much (if any) preload on the bar. The “adjuster” is for fitment, not preload.
Place the plate back onto the 3 studs. DO NOT install the bolt through the eyelet yet.
Once all is lined up, install all 6 nuts onto the studs finger tight.
It may be necessary to adjust the vertical height of the bar for bar to engine/hood clearance. This is done by inserting washers (provided) above or below the eyelet between the tabs. Typically, 2 on the bottom side and 1 goes on top of the adjuster for proper clearance between the bar, intake plenum, and hood blanket. Use your judgement.
Ensure that as many washers as possible are used between the tabs to prevent any bending of the tabs during tightening of the securing bolt.
Insert the stainless steel securing bolt through the top tab, washers, adjuster eyelet, washers, and bottom tab and put the nyloc nut onto the bolt from the bottom.
Tighten securing bolt.
Tighten the 6 mount nuts securely. (27 ft-lbs or 37N-m)
Tighten adjuster lock snugly nut up against the end of the strut bar end.
ENJOY!!!!
Thank you,
Leslie, Jay, Mike

Hmmm.. Ok I'm having a problem installing the drivers side bracket. Only two of the three bolts fit through the holes. The bolt at the tip of the triangle pointing towards the engine will not fit through the hole. I've tried wiggling and some light banging but it just won't fit. Would jacking that side of the car up work to loosen the bolts enough to move them slightly? I mean, it just barely won't fit, it catches on the threads of the bolt. I'm going to try jacking it up in the morning(it's too dark now) to see if that will work. I'd just drill that sucker out but I don't want to wreck the ceramic coating. Leslie or anybody, got any suggestions? What should I do?Brian
ps. Mine would be the one that doesn't freakin fit.sigh.Bad luck :(
MkIISuperSupra
06-08-2003, 12:42 AM
Brian,
You are the first I know of to have an issue getting the bar to fit. Has your car ever had any front end damage?
A couple of thoughts here. Are you trying to put the driver's side mounting plate on with the bar already assembled? If so, try putting the driver's side on with the bar completely disassembled and then make adjustments with the Hyme joint to get the fit. The bars are nearly impossible to get on assembled.
Also, yes, possibly jacking the car up a bit would reposition the strut studs just enough to get them to match up.
Let us know how it turns out. If there is a problem with your bar we will work something out.
Leslie

06-08-2003, 12:54 AM
YES! I got it on! SCORE! I had to make that one hole just the tinniest bit bigger and it fit. I'll post a picture of it mounted by the end of the day.I also put some rubber washers on the adjustment screw so they didn't scratch the ceramic coating when I tighented them. That won't have any effect on anything would it? The screw is as tight as I can get it and everything looks ok. I don't think it should make any difference but I figure I had better ask anyway.
Ok, hope everybody else has an easier time and enjoys their bar as much as me! thanks again Leslie, Brian
yeah the previous owner rear ended sombody and did some damage to the bumper and quarter panel on the passenger side. I bet thats causing the problem. I was using just the plate bracket for that side, with the bar unassembled. Well I'll try jacking it up then, and let you know what happens. Thanks, B

Hi,
Is there a rear strut bar also available? I seem to remember reading about them a long time ago. I imagine it would be perfect to have both a front AND a rear strut bar, right? Of course it must be a much greater difference in having the front one. Just curious to know if a rear is still available....

Most rear bars are Do-It-Yourself. They are not hard to make and there are 2 or 3 designs. They all seem to work well. One style bolts to the seat latches, another goes right over the top of the shocks-I have this style and it works fine.

Glad to hear that so many are enjoying their LJM strut bars. I have to admit I am well aware of what the bar can do. I doubt very few people will ever push their cars through turns to the levels I have. However, it is always nice to hear that others agree that it looks and performs well.
We initially started this project because there was a void that many had talked about. I knew I had contacts that could make it all come together. We were just trying to fill the void and come up with a design that would help the community get more from their cars. Sort of like being a parent, it is nice to see the project live up to its potential and it is nice to feel the community appreciate it.
Enjoy your cars and drive with care.

Looks like there is enough interest that we will probably be putting together a new group buy fairly soon so maybe we can get something worked out.
I did ship a bar to Australia last year and found that it can be done for about 27.00 US for shipping. Only very slightly more expensive than shipping to Canada. So if there are others from OZ who are interested, shipping isn't nearly as prohibitive as previously thought.

I rolled my last supra doing 60+ mph. If that bar wasn’t there I most likely would have ended up with the engine in my lap. The bar had to be removed with a crow bar and when it was removed the entire engine bay shifted over an inch. One tough bar!
Just to note the LJM bar (which I bought secondhand) is on my current supra after a little bending on the bench vice... sits extremely tight and very stiff.
Hail the LJM bar! Great for suspension and safety.

mine was hit on the front left by a guy that ran the red light. the whole front of my car was shifted to the passenger side a foot or 2. pretty bad. when i gutted the car. the front right was severly fubar. the sway bar was bent, the control arm, the tierod, the stiffiner bar that bolts to the frame, etc.. also, the drivers side front wheel was sticking out like it was an open wheel modified. pics didnt do it justice of how bad it was. you could ask dave a or eric and they can tell you as they saw it in person.
