SDR 85 P-Type, Maroon Leather, Sunroof (answered poll).

Silver 81 MKI, Black/Gray Cloth, Sunroof.

Copper Metallic 80 MKI, Tan Cloth, No Sunroof (from 14 years ago).

I have test driven a 85 SDR Maroon Cloth that did not have a Sunroof several years ago, and I currently know of another 85 SDR Maroon Cloth in a junkyard at the moment that does not have a Sunroof.

12 years ago when I was still looking around at MKII's, I found a 85 Whitepra P-Type, Maroon Leather & No Sunroof @ a Toyota dealer. Looked nice.

I "thought" AlanG's 85 Whitepra 5MGTE was a hardtop car also, along w/ possibly his 2-tone 84 Blupra??? I'm pretty sure his 85 Redpra is a sunroof car.

Aside from Leslie's 83 Red TOAD, the only other hardtop that I can think of, is Julie Davis's 85 Blupra P-Type.

The hardtop MKII's are around, but I've noticed that the majority of them are the low option/cloth interior cars, the leather interior cars seem to be the ones that are loaded up the most.

Seriously Chris? Most MKII's I see in Abq. are hardtops.

I voted for sunroof but also have a hardtop. Both are 83P types. Poll needs to be updated with more options. MSS is getting to be a big thing and the poll only lets us vote once......

Black car /w all black leather interior (btw: I think I have the L-type door panels), take a lady out at night for a cruise in the mountains, she can just lean back and look at the stars, all the while my cat-convrtr and ghetto-fab'd exhaust hanger resonate/vibrate the bottom of the passenger seat...

now how do you figure that? i really dont like sunroofs on cars, the hair thing was a joke, but the sun is what really pisses me off. seems like every time i have the sunroof open on my nissan, the sun moves itself to aim through the roof and behind my glasses, leaving me no protection against glare and harmful UV rays, lol :D

84 P-Type Hardtop.

As a rule, hardtops are better for performance cars as they are lighter and stiffer..... but that being said, I usually prefer my "toys" to have some kind of open roof. To me, cruising in the summer with the windows down and the top open is just heaven...

'82 p-type hardtop here.

I got a question regarding hardtops for all you wiseguys and gals :)
When I had my headliner out to re-cover it last winter I noticed an odd block of metal bolted to the inside of the roof! It's located about where the sunroof motor would be. I didn't remove because I figured its gotta be there for a reason. But what in the heck is that reason?! I sure hope someone can shed some light on this this oddity of engineering.

Thanks,

I have an 82 Ptype with a moonroof. I cant see out of it though...it has those black solar dots on it and tint on that (came that way). I like it for ventilation on the highway...almost no wind noise.
Plus it looks like a third spoiler when its open and really adds to the "Great White Shark" effect

Hello All,

I have had a bad experience with my sunroof in my SA-63. It rusts out qucik and fast. I don't know what was opted in America. But in Australia we have the metal skin which mine prone to rust. I have spent AUD$1000 to slow it down with no sucess... I am happy I don't have the sunroof inside my Celica-Supra...

That is my opinion.
Cheers.

My 85 leather SDR has the sunroof, and I love it. I've owned 4 mk2s now and 3 of the 4 have had the sunroof and I wouldn't be without it in a regularly driven mk2. I do find the direct sun beating down on my head annoying sometimes but when the wether is nice its great to have everything open. My favourite is to have the sunroof down with the windows on a hot summer night, can't be beat and the thing is so convient, unlike say a targa top or convertable.

My black 86 is a hard top. Its my serious performance car and I'm glad its a hardtop because the lack of sunroof saves about 40 pounds, should be a little stiffer (chassis wise) and the extra headroom makes it possible to wear a helmut in the car. That wasen't the plan for the car when I got it though and I was so dissappointed when I first saw it and noticed the lack of sunroof. Dissappointed because I knew it was what I was looking for and that I"d be buying it for sure and the sunroof was the only thing about it that didn't fit my criteria perfectly.

'83 P-Type NO Sunroof

And I'm glad it doesn't have a sunroof. I don't like them...they are fun for about the first month you have the car and then the novelty wears off. In these old cars they aren't so good. It's just one more place where rust will form, another electric motor driven device which if/when broken will be a pain to fix or replace, extra place for water leaks - right onto your seats, bad when it's sunny outside and will help contribute to the fading of your dash and seats by sunlight...the car weighs more and chassis isn't as stiff or stable as a hardtop...and generally, I just dont like the look of glass on the roof (if it's the glass type)...hardtop all the way baby... :D

A moon roof is a glass sunroof, no mk2 came with one stock in NA.

And the novelity never wears off, it rocks in nice weather having the music cranked and the windows down and the sunroof open :D

1983 P-Type Hardtop but...

My brother-in-law and I spent a morning a while back @ Pick Your Part with hacksaws and came away with the sunroof included roof from an '83 Celica. I also obtained the glass from an '86 prelude after reading stories of moonroof conversions from the old forums. All of this is part of a (funds permitting) future conversion project for my garage queen.

I would be interested in hearing any conversion stories (horror or otherwise).

My 83' L-type has a sunroof. I think it leaks but I'm not sure if it's that or something else. If sitting in heavy rain for a long period I get a minor leak inside.

That rubber seal around the sunroof is a little off like it's seperated. Anyone know where to find a new seal that better seals or how to fix that?

I thought a sunroof slides and a moon roof tilts regardless of material. I figured my glass moonroof was after market but it has a properly fit headliner and looks very stock.

The TSRM calls it a sunroof. Research showed that either sunroof or moonroof is acceptable. It doesn't matter if there is tilting glass or whatever. The only difference is how you learned to reference the device on the roof. I guess it depends on what time of day you're talking about it.

Yeah, chicks dig the moonroof on a clear night!

First car was an '82 P-type, hardtop. Never thought anything of it until I got the "new" '85 P-type, w/sunroof. Now I love it, especially on nice cool nights cruising on the highway. Open the roof, crack the windows a few inches and it's perfect. Kick on the tunes and you have yourself a wonderful drive home!

One thing I will say is that I rarely use it between the hours of about 11a-7p. I can't stand the sun beating down behind my sunglasses & blinding me / making me hot.

The earlier years seemed to have fewer sunroofs than the later years from what I've seen. In later years, it was almost standard for the dealers to order them with the sunroof.

Multiple MkII Supras I've owned and driven:
83 - hardtop
85 - sunroof
86 - hardtop (and it had to be special ordered from Japan - there were no black hardtops in the country at the time - I have that directly from the original purchaser)

Also an 84 and three 85 parts cars - all with sunroof.
