I figured I would start a thread to document my progress in this area since info seems to be pretty thin in this area. I have started to bench test the stock CPS with the MSI v3.0 and the error* duaghter card to do VR conditioning. I have managed to get a clean signal on the bench using my o-scope and am hoping to move forward with bench testing the toyota multiplexing function in MSnSe to utilize the stock ignitor and coil packs for wasted spark. If you want to do COP which MSnSe is capable of then you will need to go the VB921 route which a person on msefi.com has already done on a 1j which means it is an easy jump to the 7m. Hopefully in the next week or so I can get the multiplex function to work on the bench and hopefully by the end of June I can have it on my car and running. That is my planned timeline but it could easily be the end of summer before I have this all done. I appreciate any questions or comments you might have on this subject. Hopefully this thread will stir the pot a little and get some interest going in MS.

Right on, Al. I read about that in the manual, a bit, after I got my assembled MegaSquirt stuff from crf rider (Mark Payne) last weekend. He also hooked me up with the Ford EDIS stuff, but I'd love to use the CPS instead. Use what ya got, if and when you can. Its better that way. I'll be using the MegaSquirt stuff on a rebuilt 7mgte, going into my 1990 Toyota truck. Planning to use MS on my TT Supra as well.

I had the chance to try to interface MS with the stock sensors on a 4A-GZE a couple of weeks ago. (same kind of wasted spark setup - 2 cyls) But I resorted to EDIS instead due to time restraints.
2 pickup coils on the G signals in the 7M-GTE also? = 3 VR conditioners in total?

the 4 cylinder uses a different kind of multiplexing. You could use the wheel decoder with the VB921's to trigger the wasted spark. The G1 and G2 signals go to the same VR conditioner since they are 180 degrees apart on the cam, so they are 360 degrees apart on the crank.

Well I am going to give up on the multiplexing for the moment and trigger the coils directly from the MS using VB921's. I already have the VB921's so it isnt any real big deal for now. I will try and multiplex at a later date when i have more time to play with it. Right now I really want to get my car on the road so I can see how long the diff will last. I am thinking about investing in the boost daddy from DIYautotune.com. 4-bar boost sensor and barometric correction for $60 sounds pretty good to me. Hopefully I can start building my harness next week and get the show on the road here.
Hemiyoda: Have you gone over to Sparkandfuel.com? That guy specializes in the 4ag and builds plug and play harnesses. I would talk to him and you can get out of using the Ford EDIS stuff.

After reading up on the sparkandfuel.com guy, I'd stay away from his business... Do a search on Club4ag or DoriKaze and you'll find quite a few horror stories.
The 4AG pnp harness diagrams can be found at DK if you register.

Don't know how it adapts to a GZE harness, but I guess it'd be a good start.

Well live and learn. I guess it is DIYautotune and Glen's Garage for me.

The 4A-GZE is a bit more complex with the wasted spark setup. A vanilla bigport traditional dist. 4A-GE is a piece of cake to do PnP on. :D

Love to see how the CPS + *error daughtercard + vb921's works out for you. I want to use the 7M CPS in my 2JZ (I already have the v2.2 setup, daughtercard, 7MGTE coilpack, and ign drivers).
Good luck!

any update on this? I'm trying to set up VEMS with the stock cps, I've removed the top wheel and shaved two opposing teeth off the bottom wheel, basically turning the 24 tooth wheel on bottom into a 12-1 wheel.
is the VR sensor on the bottom wheel polar sensitive? I'm having issues getting VEMS to see the signal.

If it is like the 5M one, Red wire is (+) and whiteish wire is (-). You just have to make sure that you run a shielded cable instead of the stock wiring. Red goes to the core wire and the white one goes to the shielding.

kk, ty
do you know the cranking rpm of the 7mgte per chance?
**Edit: I'm seeing about 270-300 rpm through VEMS, with all plugs removed.

also, do you guys happen to know if I'll be able to drive the 7mgte coil packs directly from a 12v output?

Coil pack is basically a transformer, a change of current in the primary coil induces voltage in the secondary coil. A 12V DC source by itself will not drive the coil, it has to be switched on and off very quickly to generate a voltage in the spark side. That's what the ignitor does. I have never tried but if you have a very fast hand to make and break a contact I guess it is possible to bench test it with 12V.

Yeah, you can bench test by slapping the power or ground on and off really fast.
I didn't mean "could I just connect a 12v and let that run my ignition", I meant was a 12v driver enough to fire the coil.
Turns out, it is. :D
Drove the car for the first time last night, now I'm dealing with a potential bent valve problem: http://forums.celicasupra.com/showthread.php?t=56052
