View Full Version : Connecting some type of bulk-head-connector...

Would there be any electrical problems resulting from cutting the main wire-harness at the firewall and inserting some kind of bulk head connector there to connect the harness?
Then, disconnecting and reconnecting all the electrical around the intake manifold can be done extremely fast when dropping the engine in and out.
Has anyone done this? Does anyone think doing this will create too much resistence and interfere with injection voltage and/or anything else?
Thanks.

it only takes me 5 minutes or less to unhook the stock ECU and pull the wiring...... less now that i have no AC with the celica duct under the dash, TONS of room for the wiring to feed in and out easily.
as far as problems, human error, would be a PITA to go over if you did make a mistake. water getting into the connector would be another, you would want to use a really good sealed weatherpack of some sort.

Not a bad idea imo. I thought of doing something similar, but using programmable engine management was the impetus.
Be sure to use quality connectors (OE is Tyco/AMP) and wire, and with good mechanical/electrical connections the added resistance should be negligible.

I've dropped my engine out once and it took me about 2 hours to unhook everything.
When I put the electrical back on it took about 45 minutes.
It's something I think I can get faster at but it seems like it's the only thing that will stop me drom dropping my engine out and putting it back in within the same day. Or atleast take away my interest for doing it in one day.
I would like to disconnect everything while taking off the intake, and likewise. Put everything back on when putting back on the intake manifold. Then CLICK!
Connect the main harness together and bam! it's all instant!! :woot:

How many times are you going to remove your engine?!
I can't think of ANY reason to do this unless you had a racecar where you were constantly pulling the engine out. The time and money spent to do this correctly is a complete waste IMO. Put your resources to better use.
Just unplug the harness at the ECU so the harness comes out with the engine or remove the intake plenum and unplug the harness from the engine. End of story.

Disconnect at the ECU and pull the harness out with the engine.
That sounds like what I'm trying to acheive. Where is the ECU and how do I do this?

Behind the glovebox.
Remove glovebox door. Undo all of the screws holding in the glovebox. Unscrew the 3 mounting screws that attach the ECU to the upper dash. Unplug plugs...

You dont even have to unscrew the ecu, just unplug the 3 plugs and out it goes. Thats how it goes in at the factory, its very fast.

With one extra guy, knowing a bit about the car,I can pull the engine "stock 5m" in less than an hour.Engine swap in one day ..... cake walk...... 7mgte install in a weekend ...... depends how lucky I get ;)
Edit ----- Pull in less than an hour has been verified by several people on the forum,IIRC 35 minutes is the record in my garage.

I'm thinking it's time for a typed up lesson on pulling 5m's.
Here's my "quick" version .....
Pull hood, flip, set on blanket on roof.Car goes up on 4 jackstands, pull drivers front wheel.Pull glove box, unplug ECU,pull wires thru firewall.Clean work is done.Drain oil/coolant,trans fluid.Remove AFM and intake plumbing to TB.Pull fan'clutch,rad,A/C pump,PS pump unplug Alt,whatever misc. wires to body.Unbolt motor mounts, fuel line starter wires.Pull DS ,4 bolts from trans x-member to mount on trans, floor jack in place under trans, unbolt x-member from body.Lower trans, use "short" 10mm wrench to get at shifter "yeah guys, console stays installed",Recheck everything,to see what I forgot to mention,Pull the engine.2 guys, with this a any knowledge of the car, engine is out in well under 2 hours, drinking beer ;)
Don C. and myself have done several in less than an hour,Leslie G's was like 43 minutes,Jim C.'s was 35.Myself and Mike "carfreek" ------7pm fire up car in the shop, move it out, maneuver shit around, clean up a bit.His car in the garage about 7:30,Engine is in the air by 8:30,8:45 we are drinking beer, and planning the next day :D

I pulled one today - took me almost 4 hours all by myself. I always have a bitch of a time with the console - thanks Shawn I wish you had posted that last night. That will shorten my oneman operation a bit, tidier too
BTW, do you take the exhaust manifold off the head or leave the manifold on and disconnect down by the front of the cat?

Disconnect at the cat.

Yes beer helps and the job just gets done much quicker. I pullled two motors in 6 hours and that was also 6 hours worth of drinking. The only help I had was my brother came over to yank them out with a crane from his truck. The only real problem I have is the fuc%^&* fluids leaking later. Some gas came out when the line was below the tank level and the power steering fluid. I did drain all the fluid but the lines itself . I put bolts in there to try to prevent it but no luck

Pulled my 2JZ last fall in under 30 min with the help of only my mechanically useless girlfriend.
jack up rear of car, set on stands
drain radiator into pan (keep working while draining)
Unhook harness from ECU
remove shifter
Unhook fuel feed
Unhook return line
remove heater hoses
unhook alt feed wire and harness connector
remove 1 vacum line
remove coil to distro wire
remove intake
remove radiator with elc. fan and hoses
unhook starter feed wire
unhook harness from fuse panel (drivers strut area)
no AC lines, quick disconects on PS lines
4 bolts on tranny x-member
2 bolts on engine x-member
I climb under to pull down on tranny while GF pulls engine back and jacks up as needed.
I realize that having no air helps, and letting the fluids just all run onto the floor is easy too but there are much fewer connectors on a 2jz electrical wise and a total of 6 bolts holding the entire thing to the car. 12, 14, and 17mm sockets for everything, air-ratchet speeds it up.
We got done and i looked at the time, knew it went by fast, but didn't expect to be done within half hour. Another 30 min for clean up and I was inside.
Anyway, just unhook the harness from the ECU, its just as easy as a bulk head connector. Take it from a guy that has spliced together an entire harness, you do not want to be cutting into your engines nervs.
