I wanted to check before I get stranded on the side of the road, so here's the situtaion:
My car has never had the temperature raise above half, until yesterday. I think it was mainly when I was in traffic, which makes me think it might not be serious. But then again, there's two blades broken off my fan and it might not be moving enough air at a stand still. I'm in Nashville, which is not unbearable heat, so I don't think it's a summer problem. I wanted to upgrade to an electric fan, which is what I had on the previous setup. But if the water pump's going bad then I need to address that first.
So does this sound like the beginning of the water pump going south?? What do the experts think? TIA
(btw, I topped off the fluids recently)

Yes, it's trouble coming. If you go north then the fan will go south first. Having two blades off your fan has to make it "out of balance" and it will put major stress on that water pump shaft and it's bushing. You could wait until it flies thru your hood as you enter the freeway or fix it before it breaks off and tears up everything it hits on the way out. I've seen one go before.
What year are you sporting? Are you running the A/C? Those blades are needed and coolant does wear out in time. Change them both and try again.

Change the fan, then see. Take it one step at a time.

Change the fan, pronto. ...you'll feel like an idiot (and I'll tell you publicly) in a few days when it tosses a blade through your radiator, and instead of it being a $5 junkyard replace, its a $145 replace...

Yikes! Alright, I'll get a fan asap. And yes I'm running A/C ... finally. Thanks for the replies.

Edit: Anybody live in the Nashville area that can point me in the direction of a salvage yard?? I just moved here.

OK, well it's definately the fan and/or fan clutch b/c it's been almost two weeks and the temp hasn't crept up again until yesterday in serious traffic. That means my rad, coolant & water pump are fine, but when I'm sitting still, the fan's not moving enough air to cool the engine properly.
I was going to try and save some money to buy an electric fan ... but the dual flex-a-lite #210 is now almost $250 instead of ~$200. So I might look for a cheaper replacement instead. I've done some reading and someone said it would be best to attach a single electric fan still using the shroud. Has anybody done this? If so could you post some pics.

Check your coolant lvl first. If your low on coolant then you will over heat.. DUHHH if you are low its a hose or a gasket. The 85 supras have a fan clutch i didnt see what yours was but they turn off at speeds over twenty-five so if it happened in traffic going slower then twenty-five then most likely its your fan going out. Sorry if some one already said that i didnt read all the posts im in a hurry. Hope it helps :)
.. search ebay i got mine for 45 bucks with shipping.

...jekruger72. "Misled", personified. Our vehicles have a thermostatic resistive fanclutch. It has nothing to do with vehicle speed whatsoever.
(Keith, did you get that fan replaced yet? I'm over here in maryville (k-town area) and have a couple of fan's and clutches lying around i could box up and ship out for cheap, let me know in a PM or email or something..)

you're lucky yours is just running hot - mine would actually overheat and that was in the middle of Winter! (i'm between T.O. and Kingston). I changed my rad, upper rad hose and thermostat and I was fine after that. Everybody here is right - do the little things first. Only reason I went all the was because I was overheating in the wrong season.

Hmm. I have a similar situation. Well, maybe it's not similar. I don't know.
I have an '82 L-Type. When I start the car in the morning, the temperature gauge is all the way to the left (cold. duh.) and after a few minutes, the temperature works its way up to just left of the red. Now, it's been running consistently like this for months. The needle has never gone into the red, but it doesn't go down either. The needle just hangs out there one white space to the left of the red.
Weird thing is that the engine is fairly sluggish and resistant to acceleration (and sputters a lot) until it reaches that point at the right end of the gauge. I haven't troubleshot this as I'm used to the early 1990's/late 1980's toyota engines and haven't found a decent online manual for the mkII yet. Oh, and this is my first 6-cylinder, so that's a little different too, though the general principles are probably very similar.
Anyway, I guess this is what happens when you buy a used car!

Decent online manual????
Please tell us you've found the 86 online TSRM..... Can't get anymore "decent' than a OE factory manual that someone scanned in for us...

Comon Chris, it's an 82. It won't help him with the efi stuff.
You should be able to get the 82 manual from toyota, or the net if you look around. Check the sensor connection and check it with an ohm meter as per the TSRM.

Haha, sorry. I should have followed that sentence up with the fact that I haven't looked too hard for an online manual. But yes, I downloaded the 86 manual, and while the basics are very helpful, the specifics are going to be different. But I have yet to read it as thoroughly as I have for the manuals pertaining to the early 90's celicas.
So... yeah. Runs a little hot.

No, it won't help him w/ the EFI stuff, yes I know there are several differences. As far as the flakey temperature guage.. The online TSRM is a start & it's better than nothing.
