View Full Version : Air-Water Intercooler Radiator was Damaged in Deer Accident

The original unit from Spearco was damaged quite a bit in the accident. I am trying to figure out what to put in it's place. The body shop didn't really have a clue, so they told me to find something, and just give them the information for the estimate. I am hoping to have something to give them asap. Thanks.

did you ask spearco, or perhaps HKS? You could call them and ask how much a air-water intercooler is from them. If they ask why, just explain that you may be a future customer.

Currently I have a tube and fin style radiator, looks a lot like a transmission cooler. I have done some reading and I see recommendations of using a true glycol radiator from a small car with a surface area of 260 square inches or more. Does anyone see any problems with using something like this for an air-water setup? I am using a 12 volt RV pump that is rated about 6 gallons per minute.

If it will work, does anyone have recommendations on what radiator to use? Thanks.

Anyone out there?

 Just letting you know that we are out here but if they're anything like me I can't offer any opinions about this topic.

Thanks, Charles. If anyone has any ideas about using a standard glycol radiator for my air to water intercooler setup, instead of a transmission tube/fin style, please let me know. Anyone know how many gallons/minute a standard radiator will flow?

Good luck. Is your car the one with the intercooler laid across or in the middle of the intake?

In the mean time couldn't you use the IC off of the Celica 4trac? It sits on top of the engine.

Chad, I wish I could help but I'm totally unfamiliar with air/H2O setup. Have you considered swapping over to standard air/air setup?

I have considered swapping to an air-air setup, but since this setup is so rare, and the air-water setup is part of the original kit, I want to keep it pretty much the same.....just get more power out of it.

Well, I figure I can fit a radiator that is about 12" tall by 24" wide, by 2" thick. I am going to search and call around to see if such a size radiator is made. I am guessing a double-pass will give me better cooling. Is aluminum or brass better?

I would go with aluminum. Much lighter!

well, i dont see why useing a standard radiator shouldnt work. allot of te celica alltrac guys use small radiators to replace the stock heatexchanger. my friend used a radiator from a motorcycle on his 88 all trac before he switched to an air-air setup. it was much bigger then the stock heat exchanger.

heres something you should read.

George, yes that's me at a MX track in IL. I've been into MX for 25+ yrs. Also, do some occasional riding up in the mountains and woods.

william, that's a good suggestion.

Chad, are you still going to Las Vegas?

ok, call toyota and see how much this part number costs. its your best option for a heat exchanger.

its the exchanger for the st185 rc alltrac. the front core is pretty big and will prolly be a tight fit in the front of your car. also, id run 1, maybe 2 10in fans on it and also wire the water pump to always pump while the car is running. that should increase the effeciency quite a bit.

Charles,

Don't think the All-Trac IC is going to work. Different setup.

The Spearco IC that sits on top of the motor is the water cooled unit that cools the incoming air coming up from the turbo & into the TB. This unit I believe is fine, unless it got dinged when the hood shifted upon "deer" impact.

The unit that Chad needs to replace is the "water" intercooler that sits behind the nose & grille. This is the cooler that cools down the glycol/water mix (w/ incoming air from the nose) that gets circulated when you turn on the pump. This is the item that got the severe damage upon "deer" impact.

Having seen this car numerous times when it was still here in the PacNW under different ownership & took pictures of it, I'm pretty sure that this is what Chad is referring to.

And yes, as William mentioned, it does look like a heat exhanger.

That was a great link, thanks William. I am going to check with Toyota tomorrow morning and see if they can get that heat exhanger you suggested, that sounds like it would be perfect for my application, plus it is a Toyota part!!! Thanks all!

William, I took this part number to the Toyota Deaership today, but they could not find anything under that number, they said most of the parts have 5 digits followed by 2 digits. Any other options?

Call Jeff Watson. He will be able to find the part.

well, i got that part number off of alltrac.net. anyway the part is in the nose of 94 celica alltracs. if you look at the screen you should be able to point it out. id name it but dont know what toyota calls it.

I spoke with Jeff Watson and he said that number is probably a Denso number. I have spent hours searching the net, but still haven't found the part number. I emailed a guy who owns an ST185 RC in Europe....I am hoping he gets back to me.

Chad..any updates here?

FWIW... Any radiator should do what you need... I would recommend a custom 3 core, if it can fit.. and like William said, I would keep it always on the go with some fans... that should bring your intake temps down, especially on the intial hit of boost, which should give ya a few more hp on the middle of the band.

I found the part number from some UK folks. We finally finished up the estimate at the dealership....was a little over $2700 to get it fixed. The guy at the dealership said they would probably total it. They State Farm guy said they would probably total it. I said no, I want it fixed. They came out and inspected the car and took pics. Afterwards I spoke with one of their adjusters and he told me the car was gorgeous...and we should fix it.....WOOHOO! So they are going to fix the car. Only catch is that the dealership may not be able to get all of the parts so I may be asking for some from my friends here on the list...

By the way, the RC intercooler radiator can be had for around $250 + shipping.

Whew, glad to hear that they'll fix it. Some folks just don't realize how nice our cars are (especially yours).

Hi Chad,

Do you have a pic of the engine bay with that a/w intercooler in place?

This is a really old pic from before I owned the car, but you can see the Charge Cooler sitting on top of the engine.

If that doesn't work, go to the MK2 yahoo group, go to Files, find the Demon folder and look inside.
