Sometimes when I'm starting out in first gear, if I don't hold the shift knob in first, it shoots back into neutral. Can anyone tell me why this is happening and how I can fix it? I've tried using the search button, but couldn't find anything similar to my problem.

Thanks- Lauren

Is this a new issue or has it been going on since you got the car. Is the shifter loose, Is there play in the shifter.
Some things I can think of:
1) The Shifter bushings could be worn out, I just went through this, Reverse is also quite hard to get to stay in gear..
2) The gears are worn out from some one grinding the gears. I think it would cause troubles in other gears as well.

i had that happen only mine was in 3rd gear - it was ID10T though - i'd release the clutch before the stick was fully seated but it did come out going around a corner or two.... coincidence?

Mine does that in fifth when accelerating. I recently replaced the bushings, and if anything that made it worse. It could be a bad throw-out bearing, or due to a bent shifter, but most likely it is bad synchros in the transmission not letting that gear engage all the way.

Most common reason is a worn our shifter bushing, really easy to replace. I'd start there.
