I have found that if your valve covers have a lot of oil build up on them, instead of going and pressurs washing the tough hard built up crud on there off, take a rag and get pretty wet with brakes fluid, rub the brake fluid on the cover and let it sit for a few minutes, then take and hose it off with a regular garden hose (off the engine of course). If there is still some left on there take the rag and hit the little stuff with it and it you will end up with a nice clean surface. Have some pics of the valve covers i did this to. My brother has a Saturn SL2 and the valve covers were horrible. Oil build up all over them. I spent just a few minutes cleaning them up a bit, very big difference. I know some people may already know this, but for those that don't it works great.

....every mkii's valve covers are. Brake fluild is pretty corrosive. It might not be a good idea to go slathering it all over your engine.

David ..... he's a mki guy,not mkii ;) But,ya,not the brightest idea, there are cleaners that are much more enviromentaly stable. If your set on using a petroleum product as a cleaner,WD40 works just as well, and won't kill the paint if it happens to touch it.

Yeah that really took the wind out of my sails, and I didn't want to let the car go -- but one of the main reasons I haven't been posting on here is because of the childish BULLSHIT I keep finding on the forum. Stupid ghey ass arguments like this one.
^^I am beginning to feel the same way. I was just trying to give an alternate way of cleanig off all the built up oil and crud on valve covers or any other metal surface you want shiny and not all oil covered. It is alot cheaper and faster than going out and buying other prodcuts. Yes it is corrosive but i am not talking about leaving the sh|t on there, i was simple stating a few minutes then hose it off. Perfectly safe and wotn hurt the enviornment if you do it right, the only thing i got brake fluid on was the rag and the valve covers. Then i wipe it dry with another rag, no brake fluid even hit the ground. Cost a whole $1, but hey whatever last time i give some advice for a while.

Another reason why brake fluid isnt used much as cleaning agent-Its hydrophyllic(loves water) and tends to leave residue behind, both of which attract dirt. Check out those shiny covers in a couple weeks, see if theyre just as dirty. Are you actually MAD cause someone pointed out possible pitfalls in your discovery? It could be cause theyve tried this themselves, and are trying to Help you, or dont want you to hurt yourself or car. Ever see the mythbusters concerning using Coke to shine Aluminum? Its ok as a soda, less OK as a cleaning agent. Seems to me Brake Fluid is great for brakes, not so good as cleaning agent, otherwise we'd have "Magic Brake Fluid Cleaner" in 5 Gallon jugs at Costco. Just my 2 cents, Sir.
