I have a 1982 supra, and I am not real familiar with japanese cars so bear with me, but the engine I have has a rod knocking due to overheating, I bought the car not knowing there was a cooling issue, but rather that rebuilding the engine I would rather put a newer model engine in it with a turbo. My question is; how compatible are the newer supra engines with my 82's transmission, engine compartment, and wiring etc.?

The best advice I can give is to read. I've been mainly reading since my join date (hence the low post count) and I'm still very green.
As far as engine swaps go, here's a good place to start:
-> Click FAQ in the navigation bar near the top left of the screen
-> Click engine recipies
-> You'll get here http://www.celicasupra.com/recipes.htm .
BTW: Welcome and good luck with your swap!
