After going to the junkyard and seeing the floor lights for the driver side all the time, I took one and am going to try to install it in my passenger side. How hard is is to tap into the wiring for the drivers side?.And do you think it will pull too much juice(I now its only a LED..but....)

check out the wiring schematics in the TSRM I dont' see how that could draw too much juice. it shouldn't be a problem tapping into the courtesy light circuit that the door switches trigger.

cool idea! you have inspired me, definatley something to check out.

:stupid:

Likewise....

I always thought it was one of those little "capsule" bulbs, like what you find in the overhead dome/trunk/door courtesy lights. Never bothered to take one apart, I usually just toss it aside when I'm extracting a upper dash pad. Looks like now I'll have to take one apart & find out what the story is.

you might be right...I did'nt look too closely at the bulb and assumed it was my bad

I'm pretty sure it's a small bulb, just like in the gauge cluster, maybe a bit smaller.

SURPRISE!!!!!!!!

Just whipped out the spare 85 Owners Manual I have. Guess what I found on page 105 in the bulb chart????

"Step Light" assembly (that's what Toyota calls the floor light). A number 74 bulb @ 1.4W.

Looks like it's the only thing in the owners manual that uses this bulb.... Unless the bulbs behind the instrument cluster use them as well.

Chris,IIRC,it's close to cruise switch lights, ect button lights, etc.Should be a dinky little bastard, that you get funny looks from the parts guys over :D

Nice idea Mike... i think I have an extra kick panel with that light assembly. Might just bogart your design.

KUDOS!

At 1.4W, you should be fine for sure. Not many LEDs used in autos in the early 80s :]

Sorry, not for sale at the moment. It's the spare manual that stays in the "Library Bag" that I can grab for reference, so that I don't have to run out to the car & fish it out of the glovebox.

If I come across another Orange Cover 85, I'll try & let you know. Or just check eBay, they pop up every now & then.

Just a reminder for the ones that are asking if LEDs were used in thoses days...
The Digi dash is full of them !!!
All the RPM line is made of LED, so is the CE and tranny PWR & Normal indicators. I don't know about the analog cluster, I've never had one.
So, the Supra had some starting in '82 !

I didn't realize there were LED either !!!

But I'll take your word for it... I don't want to crack open my spare digital dash to find out.

I can't picture you cutting out a hole to install it.

Well If has an extra drivers side panel..I'm sure he has an extra passengers side as well. Would'nt want to damage the "chariot" you know...LOL

But with a car like that, I don't blame him.

I'm going to ;)and take a magnifying glass! the LED's are so tiny. It can't be a bulb at that size, and if you look carefully, from 200 RPM upwards, they are hooked in series of 4. This way they have to work in current, rather than voltage, which is the way a LED works.

Hmmm dooor courtesy or step light?..seems simple enough

Step light. In 85+, they are fade-outs, along with the roofliner one and outside driver side key hole illumination, as showed on the TSRM diagram.

The courtesy (2) are the white/red ones on the doors.

In my 84 the floor lights on the driver side fade out after a few minutes..

RedP85

only the floor one ?, not the roofliner one ?
(I know there was no key hole illumination in 84)

Greg G
09-16-2006, 12:40 AM
84... floor illumination fades only (and pulling outside locked handle does nothing)

85... you get the whole keyhole/dome/floor illumination fade thing happening

Well, I'm on this bandwagon.
Could you just run a splice from the existing floor light the the "new" one?

analog dash led, not to my recolection, however cruise main and r.def on the cowl (84+) green led's for the illum of the letters, (I know this because they were the only 2 fuckers that i couldent redily make red to do my complete red dashboard...

step light... I sucessfully re wired into a series of 6 bright red led's (3 for driver, 3 for pass) dash kick panels and wired all of them off of that circut in my 85... they work beautifully, and dim according to cue.

This is the only thread I could find dealing with this step light, so maybe someone has an idea about this problem. Please keep in mind that I am electrically challenged. The "step light" on my '85 doesn't work. I have checked it with a test light, and it is getting power all the way out to the bulb connector. So I figured it had to be a ground problem. Checked that and, sure enough, no ground. So I ran a jumper wire from the ground wire to a known working ground, and the light worked. BUT, it stays on all the time, so I had to unhook it again. Any ideas?

Does the light on the ceiling work / fade-out when closing the doors ?
(should do the same as your step light.)
Most probably a problem with the FADE-OUT relay, located just below the
1/4 glass, driver side, rear passenger.

Light on the ceiling works, but does not fade out. So, you're probably right about the relay. I'll check it out.
Thanks, Keith

ceiling lamp coneected same place as step light.
In the DOOR position, it should fadeout when doors are closed
