Gonna start working on it this Wednesday. I'm gonna try for as much stock stuff as possible. Does anyone see any problems using this (http://22returbo.com/howto/Integrating_Megasquirt_with_Toyota_22RE.htm) as a GENERAL Guide for an install on the 5M? I've heard the term V.A.S.T. used quite a bit, but I'm unsure if the 86ish 5M-GE uses it? I'll be using this if the 5M is indeed a VAST system.

Right now I'm using MSNS-E-029t

I don't think our cars use VAST.

I prefer to make my own harness from scratch (only like 12 wires or so). After nearly pulling all my hair out, I've decided not to troubleshoot Toyota wiring (esp. of the 80's flavor).

Don't forget the jumper on the AFM plug (I'll have to go out to the car to tell you which wires to jump). Fuel pump can be powered from a jumper from BATT to FP on the ECU plug.

Keep us posted; take pics and good notes.

Peace and all that, D

Donn: I'm going to same route as you, trying to keep as much stock stuff as possable. I just need to get an o2 fitting made and I can install what I have.

I made a connector to connect to the factor harness from an old ECU.

Good luck and Keep us posted.:eatcorn:

Been Reading the 2nd Decoder wheel info.
This looks promising:

Just need to figure it out better. Need more time. Is our ESA dizzys the same year to year, other than the cap? Or does anyone have a picture of the pickups? Also what type of pickup is it? VR

The pickups are VR. 83+ dizzies should all be the same

Would you suggest 24 and 2 Teeth, or grinding half of the 24 down?

donn, are you going doing msI or msII? For msII there is not a 24-2 decoder, unless it was done recently. I grinded down half of the teeth on the bottom weel and didn't touch the top wheel, but I'm not going to be using the signal from the top wheel.

MSNS Extra(MS1). thinking that going to 12 teeth, with Extra is the way to go, seems easier since I won't have to build another VR conditioner.
Edit so 12 teeth produces a 6-1 right? IE only 1 pulse per cyl?

I need to correct myself. I ground off 2/3 rds of the teeth. Grind two skip one grind two...... Sorry about the mix up. When there are six teeth left then you will have one pulse per event.

With 12 teeth you would have 2 pulses per cyl.

*edit* i'm an idiot. Do what Cheappower says. Its grind 3 not 2

Grind three, skip one, grind three, skip one, etc. :)

I counted 24 teeth on mine, that makes it a 24-2 wheel with the 2 for resetting. Or at crank speed 12 with a reset. So take out 3 and leave one looks right, giving 3 ignition events per crank rotation (man this tiking stuff is tough). Is this what MSnSE is expecting as a normal tach/trigger signal?

However, the problem is that the TSRM says to grind off the gear to pull the shaft out. But the gear was $86 and is not available.
Are you guys able to punch out the pin (shit what is it called?) and reuse the gear when you reinstall the shaft?

I ground the teeth with the reluctor wheel in place. The top two teeth can be ditched; you won't be needing them anyway. Just be careful when grinding away. I you screw up, I have some spare distributors

Before you do that, try the second wheel decoder option. This could save you time (and would be a great contribution to the Toyota MS community).

Did you use something like a air dremil with the shaft still in the Dizzy housing?

Yes - exactly that. I'm a seasoned grinding pro:D

Damn, anyone tried reusing a drive gear?
So after removing the teeth, I can hook this to the VR input(have to make a few jumper settings on my V3 board, easy to figure out) and hook up the coil (not the factory ignitor just the coil off the VB921), injectors and sensors. Oh power and grounds too. Pretty much it then? Am I forgetting anything?

Dizzy mods (http://www.msextra.com/viewtopic.php?t=22408&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=)
Great looks like there is 2 ways to do this, other than soildering up another VR Conditioner!

Does the 12-1 sound like a good idea, sir Spears?

Finished! (http://ciaccess.com/~donn29/Dizzy Mods 005.jpg)

It was quite unnerving, I must say....
Hopefully I ground them low enough, and there enough material left on the remaining teeth from kissing the wrong ones.

Looks good, I have mine ground a little lower. I nicked some of the ones I was keeping as well.

Thanks for the info, Keep it comming
