Saturday afternoon around 6:00 i was on my way back home from getting a price on how much its going to cost to paint my 85. may be youve seen pics, its the one with the doors shaved. well I put back on all the lights and front plates. So im driving around with no glass in the back hatch and no hood and such and i pulled in to a chevron to get gas and got out on my car to check why i was ideling so high and all of a sudden when i got to the front of my car a cop was all ready in back of me with his lights on and said over the mike get back in your car. i guess he thought that i was a threat? so i did and i gave him insureance and lic. and reg. i had it all ecept my SR 22 :bad-word: for me thats like driving on a suspended. so he arrested me and found my brass nuckels in the back of my car that i for got that they wer there. :bad-word: i was so made. every time i drive my supra i get in troulbe by my WIFE or the LAW. What the hell is going on today? so i spent the night in jail and i posted bail.........I spent all the money that i was going to use painting my car on tickets and shit. I had to be out the next day for my sons birthday. I know that sounds bad but im a good person and those FUCKING cops i swear wer just haveing a bad day. I think i should get rid of my 85.... nothing but problems.

Andrew...I am sure this isn;t what you wanna hear right now...
but many times the cop is as stick in a situation as you are...
He may not want to bust your ass about offense X.... but when he stops you, he has to call in your plate. Once he does that, the supervisors know about the situation because they have nothing better to do than to listen to the radio all night... and at that point, the cop has the choice between keeping his job and the ability to pay his bills... or letting you go, and looking for a new job...
While I really do sympathize with ya... sometimes being a cop is just as much of a shit sammich as being the guy on the opposite end..

i can't beat 26 tickets at 20 but i have.......7, had some very unlucky situations that were not my fault.....well maybe stupidity. last year when my 84 was broke down i was driving my fathers 84 olds detla 88. i got one speeding ticket for going 80, i was like ok maybe i was doing that, then the brakes failed and i ran into the back of someone, stupid car, then i got another speeding ticket for doing the same thing. One month after I finally realized that the speedo was off 13 mph...ouch but the other tickets all bad luck too happened before that...i just have terrible luck.

I have Farmers Insurance and if I paid mine monthly, it would work out to $82 per month. That's with 100/300/100 liability, uninsured motorist, rental car, towing etc.

But I think you gotta go for like three years without a single ticket or accident before insurance will give you a break. Mabe get one of those "Back the Blue" stickers on the back glass so cops will think you're one of the good guys and try and take it easy a bit. Good luck.

Bob-Are we gonna have to play the semantics game here?-No ticket quotas-OK-Police officers in my own extended family have told me of "performance standards" used for wage/grade advancement--Maybe"Suggested Contact Ticket Percentage" is more PC-BUT-These same people DO NOT start to sweat and write more tickets around the 25TH-Thats where the disconnect is with the general public IMO-I dont hate the man-I have a healthy respect for him-So no kill stories from me-too much fatal street racing around here-Mike P- :(

The mere fact that you're 1) hating on someone for 1a) giving you a break when obviously from your prior tickets you were down and out, 1b) doing what you more-or-less set yourself up for.
C'mon now. Own up to your own mistakes. You're trying to make us hate a cop for doing his job. If he was a pig, you would have had your papers and he would have thrown it away and arrested you on false pretenses. And he would have had his knee on your neck.
Cop? Nah.....But I would have done exactly what he did. Give you a break on the things I could and the rest.... well. Obviously issuing tickets doesn't click for you. Better luck with the judge.

Carfreek,
No, we are not playing semantics. There is no such thing as a ticket quota. They used to play a part in evaluations, but alot of cops were just going out and writing bullshit tickets to look good, so many departments are doing away with that aspect.
Andrew,
I can totally sympathise with your situation. I know that it seems like every time I end up getting a decent amount of up for something big.. something comes up..

Some places still have them... but most departments (thanks to the Civil Liberties people) are moving towards getting rid of them.
Based on my understanding there is rarely an 'official' quota, but there is often an unspoken, implicit quota that effects their actions.
One of my best friends is a cop in Portland, so I can see both sides of the picture. There are good cops and bad cops. Good cops use the spirit of the law. Bad cops use their power (the power of the pen and the ticket pad) to throw their weight around.
Any time I interact I just hope I get a good cop. I've dealt with both.
Supra Bob
04-04-2003, 10:53 PM
Quick...
I work with both kinds... The funniest part is, they ALL think they are the good kinds...
And yes, its not a direct Quota./.. but some departments use the amount of tickets you write as part of your promotion assessment... which is being done away with... a little too slowly IMO... I HATE writing tickets... The Court around here is a joke, so short of someone hurting someone, or taking blood for a DWI... they usually end up getting off of it, or getting a reduced sentance... Which is why for every ticket I write.. I give about 20 verbal warnings.. and even then you have to be doing sometihng incredibly stupid for me to stop ya in the first place.. :)

The interesting thing to me is how much stress affects police. My friend has been working 12-16 hour days every day since the war started (he just left for vacation) and as the stress from lack of sleep, etc mounted it was clear in talking with him how they started being much less lenient with protestors, etc.
It's hard to maintain objectivity, etc when you're stressed and tired -- just like anyone else -- the difference is the amount of power you have.
Being a cop is a big responsibility.

Yeah I was ticketed once by an MP. He had no choice. Lite bird had followed me to the gate and had the Airman stop me. First, the lite bird asked me who I was. Should have fibbed and told him I was Ops and that now that I told him who I was, I had no choice but to call his superior and demote him for interferring with Ops  But instead told him I was just a plain old civilian. (Then again Ops guys don't make like a 40 ft poster and drive a high profile car.) For some reason the lite bird didn't buy that I was just a plain old civilian. Don't know why. :? Showed him my ID. Don't have any military ID, even though I've been on that base numerous times.
Lite bird then accused me of speeding. I said, "One: You have no jurisdiction on a civilian on civilian highways especially not at peace time. And two: I saw you tailgating my car all through the exit ramp. And three: I was not speeding. I was behind a slower car and you were on my left blocking me in." Then accused me of improper lane change. Wrong. I used my indicators. Always do especially when there's traffic. I think I embarrassed him in front of his subordinates. Not a good thing to do especially when you're on their court. Even had several of my friends passing through the gate "vouch" for me and said they would be responsible for me while I was on base. Lite bird would have none of that. Then he had the Airman issue me a ticket on the only thing the lite bird could find after 20 minutes of looking over my car. I have myself to blame on that one - expired tags. Pulled the car out of winter storage for a little drive and forgot about the tags. After some delay and saluting... (had many people give me the thumbs up for my car). Airman looked at me, shrugged his shoulders and apologized. I shrugged my shoulders and told him I know he had to do his job otherwise the lite bird will write him up for dereliction of duty or insubordination which really does not look good for an MP.
So I get a $10.00 ticket and lose 45 minutes of practice. Lesson: Never piss off a lite bird. Seriously.. make sure your tags and everything are current. Otherwise they have nothing.... Nothing I tell ya. Nothing.

Must be nice; I've gotten 3 in the past year (my only three since I got my Supra). The bitch of it is, 2 of them were due to the shop not recalibrating my speedo after they change diffs on me (went from a 4.3 to a 4.1). I found this out after getting pulled over by an OSP officer at 1:00 in the morning while going 65 on cruise control down a country road. I took the car to a different shop (local) and had them look it over and they found (you guessed it) nothing; so the ticket stuck. 4 months later, I get pulled over by another OSP officer for almost the exact same situation (60 indicated, he said I was doing 71). Came to court with valid proof of a miscalibrated speedo that time, but the judge had it out for me (was obvious from the start; he was very "budy-budy" with the officer and actually disrepectful toward me), so that ticket stuck too.... :x
Finally figured out what was wrong and haven't gotten another ticket since (yet, anyway... :? )

Yeah if a cop shows up in court your pretty much screwed no matter how much evidence you have. I fought a ticket to the end and lost bad, luckily a small claims lawyer helped me get some sympathy, ticket still stuck but didn't have to pay as much. I dunno about that Starship Troopers stuff but I just thought I'd say that most cops are pretty cool. Unfortunately there are a few assholes out there that ruin it for everyone else. I have been pulled over to many times and a lot of the times the cops are cool. I got pulled over for doing 92 in a 65 zone in my Legend, it was one in the morning and I'd had it on cruise control for the last hour on an empty freeway. I was honest and told him I was just trying to get home since I had class the next day and we ended up talking about college since I was going where his son wanted to go. He ended up giving me a ticket for 84, which was in the lowest price bracket for a ticket and I completely understood that he was just doing his job. He even told me that I should keep it "reasonable" on the rest of my trip, about another 100 miles. He said that I didn't have to go the speed limit but to keep it sane. Cool guy, I left with a smile and paid my $103 without much fuss. If you speed that's the risk you take. I kept the cruise control to 80 the rest of the way home.

Quick... did you know Starship Troopers is based on what the "percieved society" would be like if the Nazi's had won WWII... with the Nazi's being the humans and the bugs being the "free world?
...I didn't beleive it either when I heard it... still kinda don't... LOL
..the book was good shit none the less..
Never read the book but in the movie the some officers were wearing WWII German SS uniforms with a few slight changes. The Germans did have the best looking uniforms of WWII, IMO.

This is going to get OT, isn't it?
The book and the movie have very, very little in common (beyond basic plot). The book is an excellent look at a facist society (though the bugs as "the free world"? Weren't they the original aggressors? Just doesn't seem to fit). The movie was, well, classic Verhoven(sp) lots of action, blood, and controversy, but not much else. By the end of the movie, I was left with the impression that these humans (the MI, anyway) are basically to stupid to live!

Oh, and for stories of bad cops getting there "just desserts"...
About 3 years ago, I got pulled over by a cop in a poorly posted park zone for going 28 in a 15. As it turns out (this gets good), I was actually going on a section that wasn't posted (parks are 25 if unposted according to the Oregon Drivers Manual) and that he was sitting radar in front of a clearly marked fire hydrant (red curb and all). Later found out that he had written numberous other BS tickets and was dismissed for it. Turns out he was one of the cops hired under Clinton's plan for increasing law enforcement, and was trying to prove he was worth keeping when funding ended by running up a high ticket count... it was sooooo fun to see him get the boot (because of a 19 year old college student :D )

just want to say, i have a defining line between cops, and officers of the law.
cops/pigs are the people who deserve no respect because they dont give respect.
officers are the people who are proud to wear a uniform and work hard every day to maintain the honor and integrity of the badge.
i always hope i deal with officers, and ive been lucky to usually get good people, whether im in the wrong, or right.
only thing i can say about quotas... they have em in my area, three relatives who are law enforcement have told me their performance/pay is very much related to their tickets.
