well i've been having problems with my new alternator picking and choosing when it wants to charge. the guy at o'reilley's said that it was the voltage regulator and that it was internal on my old alternator, so i bought a new one.
then CJSREDPRA told me that on the 82 and 83 its external. so does anyone know exactly which it is, and if it is external then where is it? thanks in advance.

hmm... I was told by my mechanic that the regulator was internal on my 82.
We replaced my Alt and I've had no troubles since.

Okay, now I'm confused.
I know for sure the 81 MKI is external.
Way back when we were on the Yahoo list, TomD has mentioned several times that 82's & some 83's have the external VR's.
Anyone know what the real story is here???

I think Tom D. was talking about mki's or celica's.83 at least is internal reg. w/external fan,IIRC 82 is the same.

Pretty sure 82-83s are internal. Dont think you have a regulator issue tho. If you did the voltage on your car would jump from around 11-15 volts depnding on how high your rpms are and then your battery will eventually start leaking and expanding.

according to my chiltons manual 71-79 had a seperate adjustable regulator and the 80-85 had a transistorized, nonadjustable regulator

the only way to find out is to put the unit on a tester, and put a load to it.

or you could folow the wires and see if they go to a regulator

Huh? There is no external Regulator. External Fan, Internal Regulator. the 84+ are Internal Fan, Internal Regulator. Read what I quoted, socal.
