View Full Version : Need help with idle/timing

When I jump the timing connector and start my car the check engine light does not come on or blink like it's supposed to.
With a votl-meter connected to each wire 4v are present.

With a volt-meter connected to the e2 and +b of the ecu 11v are present.
Blew a fuse when I shorted the e2 and +b which made the check engine light Go out. Replacing the fuse brought it back on.

With a probe touching the t on the ecu and the other end clipped to ground the check engine light does not come on or blink.

What am I missing here?

How will the timing be affected if I adjust the distributor with out jumping the base-timing-mode connector? And what should I try to set the timing to if I were to do it that way?

My idle is at a raging 2000 rpm. It's madness. I've been going through checking each vacuum line and tightening them to prevent a vacuum leak.

Only a few times after starting my car has my idle been as low as 1500 rpm for about 5 seconds or until I rev. It then returns to 2000 rpm.

Do you think it's the tps making the base-timing unavailable? I haven't really troubleshooted the tps yet.

One last thing..
I connected my timing light and was gonig to check what the timing read when the timing light wasn't strobing correctly. It was really spaced out and off key. I switched the timing clip to other ignition cables and some were strobing correctly and some were sporatic and not constant. The other half strobed fine. When disconnecting a sporatic and non-constant strobe patterned ignition cable it was apparent that the engine's performance was greatly disrupted; ie, the cable was funtioning well.

Very tired, good night and thanks in advance.

First of all, why are your running the motor????

Turn the key to start, but don't actually run the motor..... Light should start doing something.

The light isn't blinking with the key turned to acc.

What will happen if I turn the distributor without having the connector tripped so I can read base timing with a light?

Isn't that how you set the timing??

Clarification:

Jumper terminal, start motor, set timing. That is correct.

Jumper terminal, turn key to "on" (not "acc"), but don't start the motor. That's how you pull the codes.

Was reading the 1st paragraph & I thought that was one of the things you were trying to do.... Besides set your timing after you started the motor.

Your timing will be off. Jumping the connector disables the Electronic Spark Advance.

If you throw a timing light on the car without jumping the connector, you will notice that the mark will light up way before 10*BTDC like it's supposed to. When the connector is jumped out, it would put the mark right on 10* (assuming the engine was in time in the 1st place)

You can "time by ear", basically just turning the distributor until the engine sounds happy, and then test driving it, but it can be a pretty arduous process

What if I set it to something another person has it set to, without jumping the connector, will I hurt anything? My timing light has a dial knob and I think it will tell me where it's at when the mark hits zero.

Perhaps someone has a similar light and I can set it to what theirs is at.

I wasn't able to set my timing correctly because my TPS wiring is messed up, but my timing was reading 25 BTDC and was running good.

but remember, all engines are different.

Okay, my cel light comes on and timing mode is capable.
