Hi,

Although I am by no means an expert, I believe that the 5M alternator is a 65Amp and the 7M is around 85Amp (or very close). The 7M alternator from a turbo automatic can be used but the main difference is that the 7m alternator uses a narrower belt. It does require a slight mod to the mounting bracket but is really easy to do. There is a website that descibes this mod in detail and I will try and send you the link.

I have just done the swap and I have carefully cut two ribs off the original belt until I can find a proper one of the correct length. My car is an 85 but I use it as purely a second car for the weekends hence the rather crude use of the old belt. If your car is your only means of transport I would recommend finding a correct belt for piece of mind.

Hope this helps.

Downyours..... wish I used my 'Favorites' button more! Cant seem to find the site but I have definately got the paper copy in my garage. I will try to dig it out tomorrow and post the site details (its starting to get dark).

The alternator I used was from a Mk3 Turbo Automatic Supra.

Cheers.

Look at the link in my sig for some more alternator reading.
There is a write up about an 80 amp alt that doesn't require any mods to fit.

The only downside to the mk3 alternator is that it is only a 5-rib pulley and you cannot put your original 7-rib pulley on the mk3 alt because if I recall, the shaft is too small. With only 5 ribs, you have to put extra tension on the belt to keep it from squealing and that wreaks havoc with the alternator and water pump bearings making them wear out much quicker. BTDT! If you look at the configuration of the 7m vs 5m, you can see why. On the 7m, the belt wraps farther around the circumference of the pulley, almost half way around. On the 5m, the belt only contacts about 1/4 of the circumference of the pulley. Hence the toyota engineers knew that on the 5m, they needed the wider belt to make enough contact with the pulley. The camry alternator comes with a 6-rib pulley, much better for our purpose than a 5-rib, but still not ideal. However, as Darrow pointed out, the Camry alternator has a larger shaft and so all you have to do is drill out the 5m pulley to fit. I would caution tho that if you're original 5m alternator has the solid cast pulley instead of the thin-walled stamped pulley (not sure which year it changed), then you'll also have to machine some clearance off the back of the pulley so it doesn't rub the camry's alternator case.

awesome thaniks for the info. i read those write ups but didnt recall seeing trouble with 7m. 130 amp is an upgraded alternator from like a late 903 camry and also fits 7m. 130 amps would love my Bass.
Thanks People

I threw a GM CS series 105A alternator on my 4runner. If I ever did a upgrade on the 5M it'd be the same thing. $75 alternator, available everywhere and it's very reliable.

actually, you drill out the old 5m pulley to the size of the new 7m pulley, and throw on the old machined 5m pulley unto the new 7m alternator. then u just buy a slightly longer belt. i KNOW they made a longer enough 7 rib belt, but i cant for the life of me find it anymore. i ended up using a 6 rib belt that fit perfect cuz i needed it right away and found it at my local parts store. i saw a 7 rib belt online tho once...blah.
