This summer I was having some over-heating issues with my supra so I replaced the thermostat, rad cap, water pump, coolant, and flushed the rad. It ended up fixing the problem a little too well. From then on I've been running a little cool but I wasn't too concerned about it since it was summer. Now that it's winter my vehicle seems to be running fine but the engine temp rarely moves above it's lower bound.

I suspect a) this is why I have little to no heat in the car and b) that the thermostat that they recommended to me at Part Source is probably the culprit.

I'm trying to remember and I believe I put the 180 degree thermo in. Was that the right temp? Could the problem be something else that I'm not considering? Bad rad?

I'll bet having no heat in Saskatchewan is a BIG problem. Im sure someone here will have the answer for you.

Your aftermarket thermostat is stuck open. Get correct one from Toyota.

It was -35 with the wind yesterday. Having no heat sucks.

Thanks Phil, I'll try the Toyota thermo. Is it common for aftermarket thermos to get stuck open outta the box?

I would also consider putting in an electric fan in place of the stock unit. Your car will heat up so fast even on cold days. Toasty!!
I have had nothing put problems with non Toyota thermostats. Stuck closed --- overheat in rush hour traffic --- engine damage.

I run 195 or so degree thermostats for the winters here. I even ran one well into the summer.

You could also cut and place some cardboard in front of the rad. Just remember to take it out on long roadtrips and in spring. :(

You need a 19X Degree Tstat. 180 is as cold as I'd run, you should be running the 190 whatever it it is... A hotter engine runs more efficient and burns off moisture better. and gets better MPG too. my 2 cents. I live in FL where it is nasty hot here almost year round. I run my 190 somin Stat year round, no issues. Tstats are not the reason a car overheats (unless it sticks closed). A Tstat determines the Coldest a car is able to run. The fans, switches and Etc determine the Hott end of the operating temp. It's all based on BTU's and thermodynamics. So if you have a 195* Thermostat in a car, and it has electric cooling fan(s), and they come on when the temp hits.. say 210*. You're car should be running between 195-210. If it overheats you have other issues. Radiator is not large enought to disapate the thermal heat energy being given off by the engine, or you don't have enough Air flow over the Rad. Either way... Cold Thermostats (and no thermostats) are a Back in the day thing, and not correct; especially with today's cars. run a 19X thermostat year round like the car came with STOCK and fix any other issues you have that may arrise.
