View Full Version : Tick; exhaust leak or valve?

This '85 of mine devloped a tick. It's only when the motor is cold. when it warms up it goes away. it's coming from the exhaust side of cyl #1. On my corvette I had long tube headers and every so often I had to tighten them up b/c of the ticking noises... exhaust leaks. but it's been a few years, so i'm not 100% sure if it's an exhaust leak or coming from the exhaust valve train. any tips on checking?

sounds like a leak in the exhaust manifold gasket. Pour some sea foam in it, if it's leaking, you WILL see it!

thats exactly what I was thinking to do for a test. I used a flashlight looking around the manifold for blk soot streaks. couldn't find any on the top. but I can't see the bottom.

I'd just assume valvetrain noise. Recent rebuild?

nope. 180K. the P.O. "said" the head was "redone" but I find no evidence to back that up. most people say "fully rebuilt" when they get the intake manifold-up job. lol. And I have seen smoke under the hood when I used seafoam. I need to seafoam it again and pay attention to where it's coming from this time. If it is engine noise, I'll be going to a thicker cold Visc oil. 15W vs the current 10W. I have a nice metal Ex manifold gasket sitting in the garage anyway, so I'll do it and see what happens.

Thicker oil will be worse for ticking in the cold dry starts, FYI.

Having the sound only when cold doesn't sound like valve train to me, my guess would be leaking exhaust gasket. I've used a length of hose as a stethoscope to pointpoint noises before, maybe give that a shot?

well i'm going to do the ex manifold gasket. see if that fixes it. hopefully it does. I have a feeling it's that myself. If that doesn't fix it then I'll try 15-40 oil. If nothing fixes it... ill go back to my 10-40 and live with it.

Oops, meant to say cold, as in lack of oil. But since your in FL, perhaps thats not it.
Waiting to here, myself.
