View Full Version : Damn! Another Mouse!

I had a 2nd dead mouse in the car this morning. This one was just laying on the floor of the front passenger side. He looked pretty fresh too. The car was parked outside but there aren't any rust holes where a mouse should be able to get into the passenger compartment (and least not that I know of).

The 1st one happened about 2 months ago. He was inside the air vents near the blower motor and had made a huge nest in there. This one died and had a really bad smell so I had to take it all apart and clean it out.

But it didn't seem that a mouse could get from the air vents into the passenger compartment by looking at the ducts. But maybe the recirc flap (on/off) might allow one in.

Has anyone else had this problem and ever figured out how to keep them out. It's funny. I've had this car for over 20 years and this is the first time I've ever had mice get it. Sometime I think they can smell where another mouse has been and follow the trail. So if one smart mouse gets it, they all get it.

I just found this site where MANY people are describing problems with mice in their passenger and engine compartments. It appears that Honda Pilots have a huge problem with this. Some people reference soy based wires insulation that the mice like to eat. Not sure if this is a myth.

The best solution I heard discussed was to place wire mesh in the area under the dash/wiper area where the inside air is drawn in. We have plastic vents on our Supras. Below them is a channel that leads to the air intake. But I think this channel drains to the fender wells so rain water can get out. I think the mice are coming up this channel. At one point I tried to reach back in there but it's tight.

Has anyone had the body apart in this area to tell us how the wire mesh can be added?

And I did read a comment where someone said that once mice get it, other mice can smell the path. So I guess the battle has begun.....

A customer complained of a slight odor and a bad hesitation..:ugh: We told her that 6 baby mice might account for the bad smell and well the hesitation might be the mother in the intake :whutthefu

Good luck with the fight and I like the sticky trap with peanut butter in the middle once there stuck a hammer cures the problem :ugly_08:

Yup, I've had mouse issues too! They got in the rust holes of the rear quarters/wheel wells while I was installing new rod bearings in my old silver '85 I had. I finally just used some Great Stuff (expanding aerosol foam) to fill in the holes, then covered it with roof tar/sealer. They never got in that way again!

I suppose they could still get in thru the shift lever opening, maybe the steering column opening in the floor, and the forementioned air intake vents. Also check the air conditioner evaporator drain (in firewall, lets water from cabin drip out). It's rubber and could be pushed in or chewed open. Good idea on using wire mesh over the water drains for the cowl/wiper arm area. Only problem with that is the possibility of leaves getting trapped in there and causing rainwater to back up into the car.

When I bought my car, the Air filter was stained with mouse shit. That filter was used on the etest too!

I was looking around on the car last night. I don't think leaving the air control on "recirc" will keep mice out either. I anything, "fresh" might keep them out. I played with this control while watching the flap on the air box under the dash. The flap closes the opening in the box when it's set to fresh. This might help keep mice out of the passenger compartment but they'd still get into the air system (like my first mouse, who built a huge nest and then died).

I also peaked behind the fenders with the doors open. it's hard to see but I think that's where the water drains out (and mice can get in). I'll have to check the body work area of this site if anyone has posted any pics with the fenders off. I'm thinking about taking off the doors. I might be able to reach in and stuff some bronze wool or something in there (if I can find the opening).

i also had big holes behind the rear wheels. When I put the Supra out of the garage a few years ago I had a body shop weld in/body putty that area. I had "squirrel size" holes. I had that done just to keep animals out.

thanks for the info. maybe someone can post a pic of that area of the car with fenders removed.

I've never had any mice, but I will gladly give you the 6 feet long black snake that takes residency in my parts car during the summer.

That's pretty shitty. I'd be looking into a snake or cats if something like that happened to me.

I started a related thread in the Restoration area. A kind member has posted a pic with the fenders off. Now I just have to figure out how to screen off the opening (hard to reach)
