Hooked up a timing light to monitor spark...

When I hooked up my timing light to the #1 spark plug wire to check the timing the light wasn't flashing like I would expect it to.
It was skipping flashes. Are there normal fluctuations in spark? Or should it be a constant pattern without any skips.
I was not adjusting the distributor at the exact moment it was fluctuating.

Does this make sense?

Sort of, depends what you mean by skipping flashes. It should flash every other time the mark goes by, since the spark plug does not fire at TDC on the exhaust stroke. But if it flashes eratically or skips more than that, you need to pull the spark plug and check the gap etc.
