Would it be ok to start the spare car without the alternator or am I gonna burn the ECU or something else? We're talking about an 85P type. It would just be alot easier than pushing and towing

it should be ok, it's just the same as your alt being no good. you will kil lthe batt pretty fast though i would think but if your moving it not to far and dont use any electrecal stuff you should be fine..

You're right I think I got the sides mixed up. It's probably running without a battery (and a good alt) that would kill something

I know it won't run like that it's not my situation. I just remember reading something about people who want to wire their cars like F1's to ditch the battery and the caution that went along with it

F'n NOOB, ;)won't start without a battery,or a jump, but will run on just the alt.Pull your positive cable while it's running .....what happens ?
Missing one or the other will not hurt anything,as long as all cables are in a position they will not contact anything and arc/short.

Shawn, without the battery, your voltage regulator in the alt better be very good, because with very little load, voltage can go way up. The battery act as a "voltage damper" in that case.

So then here's a good "burning question"....
Power source for the EFI system... Battery or alternator??? If it's the battery, don't think the car is going to run. Alternator, will probably run.

Uhhhmmmmm, sometime I wonder why I even look at this place ;)
Dead battery ... get a jump ... she runs on the Alt. if good.Dead Alt. kill batt.,install good batt. to get home "or at least closer .... car will run on a fresh batt. for quite some time without any acc. running"
So,IMHO it should run either way.Only possible issue is if a circuit is missing,if the Alt. is not installed at all "I don't belive so,and I'm NOT going to dig out the books right now to figure it out"

A-ha! therein lies the question as the spare car is alternatorless

look just hook up the batt, if the car starts drive it if not you need an alt. but i KNOW that you DO NOT need the alt. But it will kill your batt. so dirve quickly hehe

holy shit guys. first, I'd never tell anyone to disconnect the batt while running, voltage may jump, and pop, there goes some electronics.. Not saying it won't, not saying it will.
I just won't ever tell anyone to do it.
Now, completly without an alt, the only problem is the dangling alternator belt and postive cable. tape the cable up, and remove the belt and your off to the races.
