I was driving home from the mechanic and all the gauges except the speedo and gas dropped out on me. Then i noticed the heater did not work, and the power windows and sunroof were out as well. When i brought the car back to the mechanic, he said that the connection pictured below was smoking and that when he unplugged it everything started working again.
He was right except for one thing (everything is working again) - the heater blower works, but no heat comes out. This connector is on the passenger side of the engine bay in between the washer fluid reservoir and the fender. Can anyone tell me what this connector is, and how it may possibly relate to the loss of heat?

Not sure about that connection to be truthful:
As for the heater not blowing hot you probaly have a faulty heater valve(Located on the firewall, has 2 hoses attached and some vacuumlines). Just for a temp fix so you can drive the car you can by-pass it by putting one of those hose junction things from any auto parts store. Check the vac lines going to it, I know someone on here would have a replacement for you at a reasonable price.
As for the windows and sunroof: Check your fuses, replace if blown.
Hopefully someone with more electronic knowledge can chime in and help you out with your mystery part and reasons it might start to smoke. Ill venture to say go to a local salvage yard and find a mkii there and pull another one. I wouldn't think it would cost you more than $10.

thanks for the tips - everything including the sunroof and windows started working again, it's just the heat that doesn't work now - the blower works, but no hot air. anyone else have an idea of what this connector is wired to?

Have you tried the on line TSRM?

i have - i can see that the relay there is the light retractor relay, but i haven't been able to find what that connector goes to! i've been looking at the electrical diagram, and i can't make heads or tails of it.

On my 82 there are 3 connectors in that area. One of them goes to the water valve vsv. That might be your problem. No hot water going into the heater.

thanks for the tip - a search for "water valve vsv" got me
here: (http://forums.celicasupra.com/showthread.php?t=5227&highlight=water+valve+vsv)
which pretty much covers all troubleshooting for the no heat problem. now to figure it out!

My guess is as prendad.
Under the windsheild fluid reservoir, there is 2 VSV (Vacuum Switching Valve)
Both are for heating purposes.
One applies vacuum to the water valve (just beside the wiper motor)
and the second one applies vaccum ( tube going thrue the firewall) to activate the sub-damper in the heater assembly.
There is a 3 prong plug on one of the VSV.
