View Full Version : Coolant filter update

Updating for those who wanted it. A few weeks ago I used some SS mesh in the upper radiator hose as a make shift coolant filter. Well I pulled it today and WOW did it trap a good amount of debre! I'm not running it anymore, b/c I was getting a small leak around the radiator/hose b/c of it. BUT, I am going to do the coolant filter system like the diesels have. It's inline with the heater hoses and such and takes a spin on coolant filter that looks like a oil filter. amazing how much debre is floating around in the coolant, even after being flushed a few times within 1 month.

What hapens if the filter gets clogged due to an excess of debris? You could probably overheat your engine and do serious damage doing this. Do you have some way to bypass this filter if it should become clogged?

I think the potential for disaster outweighs the gains of such a device.

He is going to put it in the heater line so if it plugs he won't get any heat. I might try that idea myself.

bingo darrow. I'm looking at the wix/napa kit, and just buying a oil filter base. same thing essentially. and you have to run a "coolant" spin on filter from Wix or napa.

Do a search on Tefba coolant filters. There are a bumch of people offering this type of thing with testimonials etc. Now I'm thinking it's a good idea too. Having something with a by-pass is of key importance to me though.

i would first spend the money on a proper coolant system flush to get all the built up crap out of the system. the filter will get clogged much faster if simply installed and left to filter a 25 year old coolant system.

I wouldn't suggest a flush to anyone. I did one on my Supra and the heater core started leaking after. It was putting air in the system, so had to replace the heatercore. I bought a bottle of the Prestone stuff and did it myself.

GF's mom had it done at the dealership. With a week or so, she had to replace her rad.

I'd would not suggest a rad flush if you have either a orgianal rad or heater core. Hardlines may even fail as well if there weak.

that is very weird. i have never seen that before. My cooling systems have always been pretty good so i never had to do a high pressure flush, just a simple dump, rinse with water, refill w/ proper mix of coolant/water. I really don't know how to explain your issues since cooling systems on my cars have never required much work/mods before.

Thats not really a flush, more of a change. I used the prestone stuff, and the Jeep was done at a stealership. I really wish they would stop going there.

I just change mine according to haynes manual 12,000- 12 months. I like the inovation..... but, as sawbladz said

This is not designed to be a maintenance-free product.

With the screw-on cap, you could check the screen every time you refuel.
