I have considered swaping out the questionable tranny from my '81 with one from an '80 model. Do any of you know if they are the same and will fit? If I recall correctly from many years ago I tried swaping drive shafts and the length was different. So I need to confirm before I go ahead with it.

Josh,

80 has the A40D tranny. 81 has the A43D.

"Internally", the only difference is the ratios.

From my "Gearbox Ratio" thread in the Drivetrain forum.
A40D 4-speed (79 - 80 MKI's):

1st: 2.450; 2nd: 1.450; 3rd: 1.000; 4th: 0.689; Reverse: 2.222.

A43D "Series" 4-speed (A43D: 81 MKI, A43DL: 82 MKII, A43DE: 83 - 86 MKII):

1st: 2.452; 2nd: 1.452; 3rd: 1.000; 4th: 0.688; Reverse: 2.212.
Very small little differences, but when you factor in that the MA46's had the 4ME & the 3.91 rear ratio, versus the MA47 with the 5ME with the 3.73 ratio, then things begin to change ever so slightly.

As for other internal differences, I'm not aware of any. Hopefully someone else can answer that question.

Same for any external differences. Have not had the opportunity to do physical side by side comparisons yet.

In theory, this "should" work..... Famous last words....

I need to change my A40D from my 1980 Supra. I own an A340E from a 1990 Cressida or I can buy a A43DE from a '86 MKII.
Do those transmission will fit my 4M-E? I'm pretty sure that they will bolt the engine, but if I just don't connect the electrical plug for the ECT (because I don't have it on my MKI), do it will shift good?
