Hi. I just did a very bad thing and bought an 81 Mk1. Black/silver two-tone, with some body damage on the right side (door, front fender.) It should hammer right out, I hope, at least enough to look okay. Nothing special, right?

Incorrect.

For $1180, my purchase includes an engine that someone obviously paid someone far too much money to work on, because sitting in the engine bay clinging to the stock 5M-E is a Garrett T3.

Naturally, I will be posting lots of pictures for you. If someone wants to give me a door, I'd love you forever.

Oh my.....

Any other signs of other turbo related stuff under the hood??

Does the motor run??? If it runs long enough, does it eventually show signs of a BHG???

(5ME's & 4ME's apparently don't like turbo's all that much, unless you get a hairdryer that makes fairly low boost. Even with the usual safety precautions done to it (the AUS guys have tried countless times), a BHG is inevitable).

Nice score!!! I'm assuming that this is the standard Code 297 MA47, or is it the Performance Package version??

I assume standard MkI, there are no signs of the PP. (No spoiler, I'm actually missing the front airdam, definitely an open diff.) There are definitely signs of other turbo goodies under the hood -- the car runs and boosts pretty damn well! External wastegate, some Edelbrock water injection bit, it's all piped up (unfortunately, no intercooler, so this lady gets hot! I should have that fixed soon.) No signs of BHG as far as Jeremy or I could tell, and he checked it over pretty thoroughly. I'm thinking stock 7m intercooler piped into this thing, front mounted since there's a ton of room up there.

My boost gauge doesn't work, so I don't know what it's pushing -- we guesstimated it around 5 pounds. Truthfully, I don't know how the hell this was done, but it seems to hold up, and it looks old enough that it's been holding up for a long while. Years, at least. I think someone really needs to look at this thing.

Good Lord...

5 psi on a Garrett T3 should be plenty fine. I would not go any higher, esp for this motor. Am glad it's still holding up, someone built this thing well.

Yep, get the boost guage fixed & see what it's really doing.

A IC should make things pretty happy. A 7M IC should be plenty fine for what it's doing.

Oh yeah.. $1180.00????? You freekin STOLE this thing!!! The minute you said it was a 5M-TE, I thought it was a non-running motor. Proved me wrong.

I think someone really needs to look at this thing.

Find a way to get it down to PA & have Damon look at it. Something's working right.

Keegan... All I can say.... Based on how well you said this MKI is running, THIS is definitely called for & you know it's coming....

:ttiwwp: Do it SOON!!! The MKI geeks are getting restless...

I don't plan on upping the boost -- if it's running at 5 psi, then so be it, that's all she really needs. I don't want to blow stuff up. Rather, I plan on making it more efficient -- intercooler and a BOV, maybe, since I have neither in right now, and she gets hot as hell. IC, BOV, a tune, and some heavy, heavy suspension work, as well as wider tires. That's all I really want to do to her -- she's fast, and she's my daily. I couldn't ask for anything more.

I'll snag some photographs when I get her home! Maybe take her somewhere where there's a little light.

I'd really like to see how this was built, even if only because it would probably help people turbo their 5M-Es in the future, and I think it's a shame to throw away the stock engine in one of these for something newer. I have a soft spot for MkIs -- I just couldn't let this one go anywhere else!

I thought about doing a 5mge turbo swap in a Mk1....stock boost and keeping it simple. Or as a more extreme swap using a 1ggte. Would be interesting.

Here's a door:click here (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=005&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=150116871479&rd=1,1)
I retracted my bid when he posted the axle code - his description says its an lsd but the axle code isn't. I think it might be a steal if you can get it under 500.

Photos are coming -- I promise! It's hard without internet access at home for the moment.

Seriously, though, if I win this thing, I might need some help getting it up here, or at least getting parts to me -- there's a free parts Mk1 in it for someone (less door and fender) if they can help me! ;)

Are you bidding on the mk1 in Grand Rapids? If so, and you win and need a Yank to get it I'll help you

4sfed, yes, I'm bidding on the one in Grand Rapids. If you could help me out, or at least hook me up, that'd be awesome -- I wouldn't mind another set of MkII rims for this thing, so basically all I need off the thing is the fender, door, and those rims if it's economical. I'm not sure if it's going to be more expensive to ship all that stuff, or the whole car, so I might have to figure something out! I appreciate the tip-off, and the help greatly!

Now, here's the juicy bits!

Now here's something funny:
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j41/vco_photos/mk1/head.jpg

Wussy old 5M-E, probably not even making 100hp to the wheels, right?

http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j41/vco_photos/mk1/turbo.jpg

...Right.

The only downside?

Door and front fender and bolt-ons, easier than rear fender or roof to replace.

This is the best color scheme IMO of the MK1.

oh man - I've owned two mark one's over the years and I still would have one except the rest of the family hates mkI's. Fugly?!
And both my 5me's blew head gaskets. First one I replaced, second one I got smart and put in 85 5mge.
I like your secret weapon pictured above. Homemade for sure - doesn't even have the clamps lined up facing the right way for retightening as needed.
I'm amazed it handles any boost.

I'm amazed it boosts, I'm amazed it doesn't blow up...really, I'm amazed about a lot of things.

Didn't win the MkI. Still need a door and a fender =/

YAY!!! Keegan finally gets pictures up!!!!

Yeppers, looks like a normal looking Code 297 81 MA47. Does not have the Performance Package. The spoiler on the rear hatch looks aftermarket, it's definitely not factory stock.

If I come across a Black shift boot & the lower half of your center console, I'll let you know, if you do need these items.

WHEEEE!!! You got the HB25 Cloth interior. Which is the same one that I have.

I don't have the boot but I have the console plus numerous other black interior parts. LMK if your interested.

I actually have the console in the trunk of my 82, what I DO need, though, is a handbrake! The mechanism in mine is so worn that it won't stay up. One of those and a shift boot are really all this interior needs! Thanks, though.

She's having alternator issues. I'm going to fix that right now.
