View Full Version : cams
my supra has a 5m-ge engine in it and my cams tick petty hard some times how can i fix that
Try 10-40w oil with a pint of Marvel Mystery Oil + filter change.
i was running in it 10-30w and i just change it
so running thicker oil would help it stay up there and they would not tick as bad
if it does i will try that
I've run 10/40 for almost 20 years, when I have used 10/30 dino oil it seems I get more "ticking" from the valve train ie hydraulic lifters.
Your call I would change the filter and add a pint+ of Marvel.
i was running in it 10-30w and i just change it
so you would recomend 10-40w fully synthetic

Who said anything about synthetic? I would only use synthetic oil on a freshly rebuilt engine, otherwise you're asking for serious leakage from a weel worn in engine.
Nope, I would use a high mileage oil ie Valvoline Max Life or Castrol High Mileage or semi-synthetic.
so you would recomend 10-40w fully synthetic

Marvel Mystery Oil works wonders - I keep a gallon can in the garage and add a pint afer oil changes to all my cars

really? tell me more of this mysterious oil.
I have been using Marvel for almost 20 years starting with my old '72 Chevy C20 350V8 Pickup as a top engine lubricant in the gas when lead was phased out and as an oil additive to keep the engine clean of sludge, acid buildup in the oil.

In the '86 and my '95 pickup I use Marvel to top off the oil nearing an oil change and when changing the oil I usually add a 1/2 to 1 pint.

I had the same issue noise cams and a stuck lifter. I followed AJ suggestestion from a previous post and He is right it works great! As a matter of fact I went out and purchase 8 bottles of Marvel when I found out Turtle wax is not going to sell it in Canada anymore.
Trust me ( and AJ) 10-40 and the MMO will help.

I'll back up AJ on the Marvel Myst Oil. I've been using it in everything I've got, including my motorcycle and lawnmower. My bikes a 72, hadn't been run since 80', I picked it up last October from a guy who pulled it out, changed the plugs/oil/gas and sold it to me. It ran well rough but lots of valve noise etc etc. I finally drained a bit of oil our and added in MMO, less than 100 miles later it ran like a whole differnet bike. It's also helped eliminate valve noise on the 5m.

Another '20 year MkII ownership' view...
Marvel Mystery Oil acts like a lubricant and solvent.
It gets 'consumed' in the oil, so if you like what it does, add another pint at 1/2 your oil change interval to replenish the usage.
Another way you can use MMO to quiet things down is in the gas tank - try 8 oz (1/2 pint) every other fillup.
Like AJ, I got a lot more noise when I ran 10w30, but it was Mobil 1 and Penzoil Platinum - both synthetics.
I looked into what the cam grinders were suggesting for oil and they like oils with robust amounts of zinc, phosphorous, and calcium.
It turns out these oils are 'old school' when the push today is to make 'energy conserving' (thin) oils.
Without adding MMO, the 'quietest' oils I found are the diesel oils, which coincidently have good amounts of zinc, phosphorous, and calcium. Shell Rotella, Chevron Delo 400, and Motocraft in 15w40 work as well as 10w40 and MMO.
I did find some good 'passenger car' oils that I like of the right 'old school' chemistry, but they are not readily available at Walmart - Schaeffer's 10w30 and 15w40 and Brad Penn 10w30 come to mind.
