What would cause an AC comp to lock after a conversion?
Background:
The comp is a 3-4 year old rebuild ,I guess, from BAP-GEON, ran me about 250.00. New A/M condenser and a new reciever drier. Vac'ed the system for a leak test then filled with Freeze-12 and 4 oz R-12 ester oil. Cooling was ok ~45-50 at the vent. The charge held fine for ~2 years. Slowly lost pressure then nothing. Recharged once and got another year out of it. Theis spring I lost all pressure, So I decided to do a quick conversion.

I vac'ed the system for about 45 minutes and recovered about 3 oz of oil. Recharged with 134 and added 4 oz of compatible oil. Started the car and got 32 at the vent on a 90 degree day......YEA!!

This rolled along fine for 2 months, then the cooling faded quickly over 3 days. Then dropped all together but the comp would still cut on. Measured the pressure at the low side and read 150 with the engine off. Vac'd and recharged again with fresh oil and the belt started to squeel and sheered the clutch,I think. I'm pretty sure the comp is locked, and I'm f**ked into getting a new one............................

Question is: What did I do wrong???

I know I did not change the rings/drier/ex valve, but would this cause a lock?

Could just be a bad rebuild and the comp wore out? I'm not sure if you really did anything "wrong," then again I'm not an expert. I went through your same issues though. Ended up having everything replaced BUT the compressor and then after 3 months the comp locked up :(. All I can say is old AC systems are a PITA.

Mine was not converted and went from working fine to stalling the engine at a light.

So it might be just shot?

I was told once it locks up it's fubared. Although I'd like to hear rebuild experiences from others wether it be from lock up or just leaking
