Until one day they just didnt come on at all.My parking lights come on the headlights flip open, but dont turn on. I changed the headlight switch thinking it was that but still nothing, I bought a new headlight relay from toyota, put it on but still nothing, checked all the fuses inside and out and there all good.:sadsmilie NEED HELP.

Sounds like you are going at a good rate for troubleshooting...not sure what else it may be

where in Pa are you at?
Having a similar issue w/ another locals '85 - havent really tried to hard to fix it yet, but I think I've narrowed it down to the combination switch itself.

Have you tried changing the sealed beam units? I had a similar problem with my car as well. They are cheap too at only about $16 a piece. Try that as well.

Yesterday I bought the relays that are in the door sill duct which one of them is the headlight control relay, security warning relay, wiper relay and one other relay. I got to change three out of four cause the security relay that i got was not right. After i did that i got power to the headlight relay and fuses in the fuse box but the headlights still dont turn on.I checked if the pigtails had power and all three terminals had power. Weird. But anyways im one step closer to getting them fixed. Also my High Beams work now, and the fog lights do come on but no head lights. :( Any suggestions?

We tried the different relays as well and I'm figuring that the stalk/ switch itself is the problem - atleast thats what I'm probably going to try next.
BTW, any chance your MKII is red? Do you have a vid of it up on youtube running at Maple Grove Raceway?

Well if all three terminals have power you won't get light. One of those has to be a ground. try tracing it back. Probably a short somewhere.

Yeah my MKII is red but i didnt post any video on youtube.Well i do have another switch and i'm going to try that again, As well as traceing the ground back from the head light plug. maybe i'll start with the pass. side then the drivers side. i also noticed that my highbeam light on my dash is not lighting up when i switch them on.

Make sure the switch you use is for the correct year. I have an '82 and like most everything else, they wired it a little differently.

sometimes you can replace the stalk (headlamp switch) but its the entire combonation switch, including the wiper switch and the piece around the steering shaft. are you replacing all of those or jsut the headlamp porting of it?

I would say it's more likely an open circuit than a short circuit. You're not grounded somewhere and so current won't flow.

Yesterday I checked the switch and it turned out good, so what i did was turn the lights on and just added a ground to the red and light blue wire( that is the ground for the headlight) and they came on. So I'm starting to beleive that its a bad ground somewhere. But to find out where. :faint:

Awesome!! Finally, Let There Be Light!! the problem was the red and light blue wire coming from the switch to the headlight. I added a new wire frome the switch to the headlight and POOF, the lights came on. Highbeams work, interior high beam light works, like new. Thank's everyone for the suggestions. hope fully this will help someone else in the future.
