View Full Version : mass air flow sensor
Is it unusual for the Mass Air Flow Sensor to go bad? I am blowing black smoke often and sometimes it slow the car down. I went 2000 miles with no problem, but now the chugging has begun. Not sure what the problem is, but one mechanic pointed to the.MAFS.

Some times yes.......
ON OTHER CARS!!!!!
For the rest of you that keep thinking this, WE DO NOT HAVE MASS AIR FLOW SENSORS, WE HAVE A AIR FLOW METER!!!!!!!!!! THEY ARE NOT THE SAME!
MAF's have little sensors inside the housing that sit inside the airflow area. Our's, on the other hand, have a big giant flap door.
[Edit] And by the way, DO YOU HAVE ACCESS TO EITHER THE TOYOTA REPAIR MANUALS, OR THE MKI HAYNES MANUAL???? And try running diagnostics on it?? Instead of spending $$$$$ on another AFM & it turns out it's another problem?? (Yes, I saw your wanted ad).

Sometimes the spring that keeps the flap door shut can break...but usually when that happens they don't want to run. Has the cover ever been off it before? Maybe someone cranked the AFM a few clicks too rich in the past? OR...maybe the injectors need a good cleaning. Deposits on the injector nozzles can cause poor atomization, leading to poor combustion. Ideas, ideas...
